Find Your Happy Place

"Find your happiness. Go there often."

Finding your happy place sounds cliché, I know, but everyone has at least one. A happy place is a serine place that puts positive thoughts in your mind and a smile on your face whenever you're there. For those who haven't yet found their happy place, I've generated a list for you to try, because each and every individual should have somewhere that enlightens their mood.

1. The Beach

The beach in general could be your happy place, or it could be a specific beach or boardwalk. Ocean city is one of my personal happy places. As soon as I drive into the town, I instantly smile and feel at home. The beach can be quiet, or loud. It can be warm or chilly, and it has everything you could want.

2. A Walking Trail

Find a walking trail near by, or some kind of outdoor serenity. Having a walking trail to clear your head, enjoy the fresh air, and get in some exercise, is the perfect happy place.

3. Your Couch

It sounds kind of silly at first, but when you think about it, sitting on your own comfortable couch with a cup of coffee and a movie is pretty satisfying. One of my favorite things to do when I come home for the weekend from school is wake and sit on my own couch in the morning.

4. The Farmer's Market

Being around fresh fruit and vegetables, and beautiful flowers in the spring and summer screams "happy place." Summer is my favorite season, and the farmer's market automatically feels like that season.

5. Outdoor Shopping Centers

You don't even have to like shopping to enjoy an outdoor shopping center. Stores, restaurants, ice cream places, and more, nothing compares to the experience. There is a great one near me, and I could go there everyday and just walk around and window shop, or just go to eat. A nice day at the shopping center is definitely one of my happy places.

6. Your favorite Vacation Spot

Whether you like skiing vacations, or beach ones, vacation is meant to be a happy place. Personally, I could never be unhappy on a cruise ship.

7. A Childhood Memory

Anywhere that you enjoyed as a kid is something that can still be your happy place now. Maybe it's the pet store, or the giant playground in your neighborhood, or even on the trampoline in your backyard.

Finding your happy place is easy when you know where to look. I think having one (or more than one) is important, because it's the only place that changes the way you feel in an instant. Plus, everyone needs somewhere to escape to when their stressed or having a bad day. I wish all those looking for a happy place luck, and to those that already have one, it isn't too late to add even more.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
