It's not over.

Have you ever felt that life continuously fights against you at every turn? You put all your efforts into something where you FEEL that it would go your way but, surprise, it doesn't? I can safely say that 2016 was a year that few were expecting. With this age of technology, it's possible to engage more with the global community and communicate with family across the globe whenever needed. Unfortunately, as a 22-year-old, this only makes me feel more insignificant in this big world of ours.

My hobbies generally revolve around reading and writing, mainly because they have the benefit of letting me live lives that are not my own. Friends and family have a way of interfering sometimes with the notions of "You need to socialize more" or "Maybe a boyfriend will help with your antisocial behavior." Social media isn't much of a haven either, as opinions tend to fly much faster as people believe they have the right to say them since it's in a virtual world. This year was even harder as the US entered a monumental election cycle, with an "interesting" victor coming out on top. For the loudest, most rash individuals, it was a sign to make their country "great again"! For many others, it may be the beginning of losing their home as they know it. Security and individuality will be challenged through the next four years more than ever, so please stay safe and find a safe haven until it's fine to come out.

Many idols were also taken away from us. From great musical legends such as Prince and David Bowie to great life figures such as Muhammad Ali and Alan Rickman. They provided individuality in their unique ways that will continue to inspire future generations. It would be a dishonor to limit others who wish to do the same.

The Syrian refugee crisis. The Ukraine crisis. The effects of El Nino. Standing Rock protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Black Lives Matter. Equality. There are many humanitarian disasters happening around the world, and it seems that they only increase with time. Often, it comes down to how we react to each situation and how much of our humanity we wish to use to engage with our community. Unfortunately, the media and family can sway our perspectives and only discuss one part of a very complex issue. This year shows what can be the outcome of only spreading fear and hate to many individuals.

What I consider as a silver lining is how much connection we were able to achieve in 2016. What made our elders believe they were "great" compared to this generation is their ability to be ignorant. It was easy to hide issues during their "prime" time. We no longer have that privilege. We are stronger now, more united, and much more educated. We must use these lessons to our advantage to correct the many errors and horrible actions of the past in order to have a brighter future tomorrow. "We must be the change we wish to see in the world." (Gandhi)

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
