For every mood, feeling, emotion, and moment in time, there is a flawless song that perfectly expresses your internalization of the world around you. However, even with the overwhelming amount of genres, artists, and music streaming networks, sometimes we get stuck listening to the same five songs for weeks. With that being said, are you tired of the repetitive songs on the radio? Are you looking for a new playlist of jams? Based on what you’re listening to now, here’s a list of songs and artists you should check out asap:
We all know the classic hits by Miguel, such as "Sure Thing" and "Do You," but he recently released a remix from his latest album "Wildheart." His remix of "Simple Things" features Chris Brown and Future, further exemplifying the album's sensual feel. If you’re looking for more songs that match this sentiment, you’ll enjoy Miguel’s song "Coffee" featuring Wale, the valley, and waves. This album’s eclectic style has a similar style to Frank Ocean’s "Channel Orange." Perhaps you could further switch up your playlist with some Ocean’s throwbacks such as "Lost," "Pyramids," and "Sierra Leone."
Are you into indie/electropop? If you relate to the sad west coast vibe expressed by Lana Del Rey, you will fall in love with her 21-year-old counterpart Halsey. Although Lana is more of a slow jam producer, she still has a parallel taste in expression with the electrically upbeat Halsey. Both sharing the bad girls falling for bad boys’ lyrical style, they express a matching ambiance. They even have close to matching titles with Lana’s song "American" and Halsey’s song "New Americana," both describing the millennials of the U.S. as being “young” and “dope.”
Finally, if you haven’t already you MUST listen to Rihanna’s new album "ANTI." Featuring Drake in her hit song "Work," this pair sets the tone for "ANTI’s" unique sound while still having the classic @badgalriri flare. If you find that you are a fan of the sound of this album, be sure to listen to Rihanna’s most recent muse, a trippy band from Australia. Her distinctively diverse song on the album is "Same Ol’ Mistakes," is a cover from the psychedelic indie-rock band Tame Impala. If this song catches your ear, you’re certain to be a fan of Tame Impala’s hit songs "Let It Happen," "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards," and "The Less I Know The Better."
Although there may be some personal bias due to my preferences of R&B, indie, and electronic music, any of these artists are a great way to liven up your playlists.
