Finals Week: "SpongeBob SquarePants" Edition

If SpongeBob can do it, so can we.

As a college student, I often like to quote "SpongeBob" for a quick laugh, because many other college students have also grown up watching the show, and share a mutual love for it. Many of the episodes are very relevant to our lives right now, especially during finals week. As many of us are grinding away studying and writing final papers, we can have some relief that even our childhood cartoons understand our pain.

1. Struggles of keeping focused to get things done last minute

When SpongeBob has to write an essay for boating school, he can’t seem to keep focused and finds a million other things to do instead of just committing to writing his essay. We all find ourselves to be focused on little details and tasks before doing the more important, stressful activity.

2. Tests are hard and bad scores happen

Tests can be difficult, especially when you have multiple things going on all at once. Even when we think during the test that we might just be able to pull off a passing score, we get the grades back, and we might as well have not taken the test in the first place. SpongeBob finds himself in this position often when it comes to boating school, but he never gives up, regardless how many times he has retaken the test. Bad scores just happen sometimes.

3. Food-related items are a must

I think we have all been at the point of being so stressed that candy and sweets become a big driving force of our existence, and we will do just about anything to get them. Even if everyone around us thinks we are crazy.

4. Your brain is overloaded with so much information in a short amount of time

That was when Squidward had SpongeBob become knowledgeable in the field of “fine dining” in a short amount of time. This only allowed Spongebob to know the information for a short amount of time before he had a breakdown where he was no longer able to take any more information, and essentially was broken. This feeling is all too real for college students during finals week.

5. Accepting and embracing your stressed-out, dead look

Sometimes you just don’t have the time to look like a presentable, contributing member of society. After a couple of days, you start to wonder if you ever want to wear real pants again because, well, you are ugly, proud, and passing your classes.

For all my fellow college students going through finals week: Regardless of how stressed and tired you may be, you are in the home stretch, and that much closer to a very deserved break. If Spongebob can get himself through similar stages, you can too!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
