Finals Week Survival Guide

As Thanksgiving break comes to an end, the dreadful realization that finals week is upon us is scaring college students everywhere. How could this semester already be almost over? Many of us are wishing we could fast forward to Christmas break already. Classes are at their toughest point of the semester, all-nighters are the norm and coffee is what keeps us alive during all hours of the day. I'm just as nervous and stressed out as the rest of you.. so here's some tips on how to survive Finals Week.

1. Breathe

It may seem like the world is crashing down on you, but I promise you'll get through it. Whether you're a freshman and it's your first time experiencing finals, or you're a senior and you're just ready to be done (aka me). Finals is not the end of the world. You may be stuck in zombie mode for a few weeks, but just remember how great it'll feel to hand that final test in and say hello to Christmas break!

2. Get organized

Trust me, I know how many projects and assignments are due at the end of the semester. Especially the ones that were due a few months ago that you totally forgot to turn in (you're not the only one). Get your crap together, make a list of what needs to be done, and push through it!

3. Have a dance party

You're allowed to take breaks from studying! Studies show that a college student's attention span only lasts around 10-15 minutes. Get up, stretch out, dance around, do whatever to get yourself going!

4. Drink coffee.. or wine.. or both.

Anyone ever heard of the statistic that a glass of wine before bed is actually good for your health?

5. Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night

You may think that staying up all night and cramming for that final is going to help you, but I'm sorry to say that you're wrong. You wont perform as well if you're sleep deprived!

6. Form a study group

Working with other students in your class is a great way to study or finish a project! They are there to answer your questions, give you some tips on how to remember certain things and cry with you when you start freaking out about the final.

7. Think of the future

Part of you probably just wants to say screw it and give up on studying. You need to remember that you need this class to graduate, your parents (or you) are paying a lot of money for your education and your entire future depends on it. Suck it up and be a big kid!

Finals week is probably the most stressful time of year for college students. If you take the right steps to study and prepare yourself, you should kick that final in the butt and say hello to Christmas break! Good luck!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
