Bucket list destinations for the struggling college student

Finals Week Destinations

As a college student routinely going to classes and studying all the time, I've spent a good amount of time dreaming of global destinations/events I hope to see and experience in my lifetime. Traveling is one of the things I enjoy the most and I hope to be able to keep adding destinations and traveling to them throughout my life.

Sitting at school during finals week has only made me want to be somewhere else exploring and experiencing. Here are a few of my favorite destinations that I've heard of over the past year and added to my bucket list.

1. Green Lake in Austria

This lake is unique because it is a 40 ft deep lake in the winter and a walkable park in the summer. I'd definitely want to visit in the winter to scuba dive through benches and tree stumps.

2. Carnival - Rio de Janeiro

Carnival is a celebration before Lent that attracts people from around the globe. Street parties, parades, and vivid costumes keep festivities going all night. I would enjoy dressing up in a bright costume and parading the streets with a group of friends.

3. Hitachi Seaside Park - Japan

The pictures should say it all for this one.

4. Glowing Beach, Maldives

Chemicals cause plankton to glow and light up the waves on the shoreline at this beautiful beach. I can't wait to be there one day.

5. Berlin Wall

The history behind this wall lands it a top spot on my list.

6. Great Wall of China

Another fascinating wall with a rich history I'd love to be able to see firsthand.

7. Running of the Bulls

Every year in Barcelona and Madrid, men dress in white and test their speed and strength against the bulls set free in the streets. It's a fast-paced, exciting event I'd love to see firsthand one day.

8. Kings Day, Netherlands

One day every year, flea markets and parties fill the street and the country turns orange as people gather to celebrate the king's birthday.

9. Clear Water in Menorca, Spain

These boats seem to be floating through the crystal clear water in this destination in Spain.

10. Koh Samui, Thailand

This exotic island speaks for itself, with it's beautiful beaches and unique activities like riding elephants.

While I'm at school studying for finals, I dream of visiting these destinations and experiencing all that they have to offer. If I had unlimited money and time, I would be in a new country every day. I hope to create a life for myself where traveling around the world is viable. Until then, I'll be enjoying the little adventures in life and burying my head in the books.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
