Finals Week as Told by Friends

The journey from cramming to crying.

Finals Week as Told by Friends

It's that time of year again. You've just returned from stuffing your face on Thanksgiving, and now you're about to be thrown into a jungle. That jungle is known as finals week. You'll most likely be up for hours on end every night, ordering a ton of food from Nikolas, and guzzling a ton of coffee. Sleep? Good luck. The lady at Starbucks in Miley might even start to memorize your order since you'll be down there so often. Soon enough you'll just tell her, "I'll have my usual," as she pities your baggy, sleepless eyes. Over the course of these next three weeks, these are the things that will probably be going through your head:

1. "How many days do we have until break?"

You’ll be counting the days of suffering until you can go home before even beginning to study.

2. "If I sleep for four hours then I should be OK, right?"

You’ve been studying forever. Even though going to bed is the only thing that you want to be doing, sleeping takes a back seat while you continue to cram.

3. "What's a balanced meal?"

Ramen, Easy-Mac, Hot Pockets, Chef Boyardee, and Red Bull become your new five major food groups.

4. You miss being home.

The memories from home start to kick in and you go back to counting down the days that you have left until break. Then you start to cry when you realize that it’s the same number of days as when you started studying.

5. Your appearance becomes the least of your worries.

Your new look is sweatpants, hair tied, and chilling with no makeup on. It may not be your prettiest, but going to class in anything but sweats is definitely not on your agenda.

6. "I’ll just read the Sparknotes."

You begin to accept defeat and consider transferring to clown school. You decide that if you don't know it at this point then you never will.

7. "What GPA do I need to maintain?"

That 4.0 seems nearly impossible at this point, if it didn't already. Settling for the bare minimum looks like your only option for the sake of your sanity.

8. Your first final arrives and you can't face the reality of it.

You've done all that you can to prepare (or, at least, you tell yourself that). At this point it is what it is.

9. You feel as free as a bird after all of your finals are over.

Drop the mic. You're done. Run out of that exam like your life depends on it.

There are less than three short weeks between you and the holidays (and not having to eat Miley for a whole month). So every time you think that you just can't go on, push a little harder and grab another cup of coffee. You can do this.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
