If you've ever seen "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," regardless of whether it was the 1950s cartoon or the more modern take on the story with Jim Carrey, you probably faintly recognized a similarity between the mean-spirited Grinch and UVA finals week. In fact, the story of the Grinch, told by Doctor Seuss originally, perfectly mimics the end of the semester.
The story of the Grinch begins with the town of Hooville, celebrating in excitement for the upcoming holidays, as the evil Grinch watches from above and watches over their town like a bad omen. The 'Hoos just want to enjoy reveling in the Christmas spirit with their Christmas-themed drink specials, but finals hang over their heads, watching them.
The Grinch then decides to ruin the 'Hoos' Christmas, puts on a Santa suit, and raids the 'Hoos' houses as they sleep soundly in their beds. Honestly, these little 'Hoos are just trying to get their beauty rest for their finals, but they can't help but feel the weight of finals in their dreams.
The Grinch then takes all of the Christmas presents, decorations, food, drink, and trees from the 'Hoos' houses, loading them on a sled and dragging them to be dumped off a mountain. In the same Grinchy way, finals kidnaps all the sleep, food, and health from the 'Hoos, puts it all in a Blue Book, and drags them home to be graded.
The Grinch thinks for sure he has taken all of that annoying Christmas spirit from the 'Hoos in Hooville. However, come Christmas morning, he still hears joyful singing.
So, 'Hoos in Hooville, don't let the Grinch-y spirit of finals dampen your Christmas cheer. Keep singing the "Good Old Song," at full volume, even as finals steal all of your food, happiness and soul. Sing your carols, light your trees, and keep smilin'.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
