Finally! A Positive Reflection on 2016!

Finally! A Positive Reflection on 2016!

I imagine every writer that is forced to write a final article for the year of 2016 is digging through their old files or typing random assortment of words about Christmas or New Years. I decided to do something that everyone is starting to do: reflect on the last year.

Most people are writing about how bad this year has been. Yes, Donald Trump is going to be our president in 2017. Yes, Hillary Clinton won more votes but because of a system designed to curb democracy, she didn’t win the presidency. Yes, Brexit happened. Yes, the Earth has had its warmest year and people are still saying Climate Change isn’t real.

But for once in the history of reflections of the news this year, I am going to be positive. We all need positivity right now when we are spending time with family or seeing old friends.

So what are some good things that have happened? Bernie Sanders is back! Well...he never really left. Whenever I turn on the news, I smile when I hear his soothing Brooklyn accent. He even released a book!

David Bowie released his final album in January. Panic! at the Disco, Rihanna, Sia, Kanye West, Chance the Rapper, ZAYN, Weezer, Beyonce, Blink-182, Travis Scott, Green Day, Sum 41, Frank Ocean, Onerepublic, The Weeknd, Childish Gambino, J. Cole all released music this year.

Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar, thus ridding the internet of certain stupid memes. Speaking of memes, while some memes got classified as white supremacist, others made us all laugh.

SNL had its work cut out for it this year. But besides the election skits, they managed to produce some truly wonderful original content.

Pokemon Go allowed people to relive their childhood (and also look like complete morons in public). But nonetheless the app encouraged people to spend time outside.

Two new Harry Potter books came out...kinda.

American Olympic athletes brought home 121 medals!

Virtual Reality is starting to become mainstream. I can already see the wonderful possibilities VR can bring to those who can’t travel or to those of us that want to visit the world in our living rooms.

Bob Dylan won The Nobel Prize of Literature.

The Paris Agreement was signed.

Now this is not a comprehensive record of all the great things that have happened in 2016. I could have written an article about how my 2016 was but I decided that no one needs to hear about my year. People need to hear about their year. Our year to be exact.

2016 has been a horrible year for a variety of reasons but we need to remember something: we are still here. We may have lost artists we loved, seen our choice for president lose, or even felt a loss that was more personal, but we are moving on. We are going into 2017 with the knowledge of how a year should not be. And with that knowledge, we can make 2017 to be a better year for all of us.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
