Let's be honest, America - the presidential debates have been pretty damned far from perfect. The candidates go over time, questions are rarely answered in full, and everyone watching feels like they're having their fingernails pried off with pliers. The heart and soul of the debate process seems to be taking a passenger seat to the personality war of the candidates, much to the frustration of a lot of people. So - after some research of the web and conducting a few polls of my own, here are the topics a lot of us feel haven't been touched up nearly enough in the debates.
Climate Change
This is potentially the big daddy of debate topic avoidance right now. With our hilariously large CO2 levels (More information here: http://400.350.org/) and the dying Great Barrier Reef having blown up on social media, we're getting frustrated with how very little it is being discussed. We want to know what both candidates plan to do with our environmental agencies, especially since some candidates have appeared to be at odds with their running mates or constituents on the topic.
LGBT Issues
Although LGBT rights have been touched upon briefly, too many questions and concerns about them have arisen this year for it to be a back-burner topic. With questions of states reversing the marriage equality act and the proliferation of Trans bathroom laws, it's direly important for the LGBT community to know what's in store in their futureGun Reform
Gun control is a booming controversy right now (HAH - "booming") and deserves to be discussed more specifically than it has been. Whether or not you think guns deserve a prominent place in our society, it's one of the hinging topics of undecided voters, and guns have only been talked about in relation to specific incidents - they need to be talked about in terms of policy.
Black Lives Matter
A movement that has become synonymous with its controversy, it's been at the forefront of public consciousness for the three years of its existence. Everyone seems to have a different, specific opinion on it, ESPECIALLY our politicians, and with some saying that BLM is a hate group, we want the candidates to weigh in.
Sexual Health/Safety
This is especially a hot topic this year, what with all the scandals that made us all feel wonderful about humanity. Especially because our judicial system has been divided of late as to whose fault assault is, we need this to be discussed specifically and without hesitation. (Also, the assaulter is at fault. Sorry not sorry.)
Research & Technology
Whether it's the heavy funding cuts on NASA, continued research into illnesses like AIDS and cancer, or controversial funding like stem cells or Planned Parenthood, science isn't going to go away this election, and has barely been discussed beyond the basic hot topics. I'd love to hear how each administration would handle our current science funding.Something Positive About The Other Person
This was a question asked last debate, and I think it should be a standard. It was HILARIOUS how terrified both candidates looked. Keep it up!
Kenneth Bone
The American Public deserves more of this man. Is he a hero? Is he a villain? Are red Christmas sweaters now fall fashion? We demand answers, Washington.
