How To Get Through The Final Stretch Of The School Year

C'mon guys, we're almost there.

Well, Spring Break has come and gone, and that only means one thing: it can only go down from here. As students, we are drained at this point. The work seems endless, your 9 a.m. is getting harder and harder to get up for, and your trying your best to remain awake and at least pretend to pay attention in class. The worst part is, you have zero motivation and you just don't care anymore. Spring Break tends to do that to a person. You are at the point where you crave summer. And it doesn't help that the weather is bipolar: winter jacket and gloves one day, short sleeve t-shirt the next. It sucks. Plain and simple.

But on a positive note, we will get through it. Here are a few tips to help you (and me) get through the final stretch of the school year.

1. Keep yourself on a regulated sleep schedule

Don't sleep through your classes. It just starts your day off unmotivated. Go to bed before midnight. I know it's easier said than done, but if you're getting your eight hours in, you are less likely to want to sleep in until noon.

2. Fast food should not be eaten more than once a week

Yes, that means ordering pizza. Fast food is quick and easy, but eating junk food makes you lazy. It truly does reflect on your well-being. So take an hour out of your week to run to the grocery store for some fruits and veggies.

3. Hit the gym

I know, I know. If you barely have time to eat, then how do you have time to workout? Think of an hour that you spend just sitting around on your phone. That's an hour that you could be getting some exercise. Also, you can bring your laptop or iPad to the gym and watch Netflix while you're on the treadmill. Two birds with one stone.

4. Make some time for fun

You're doing college wrong if you never get out and have a little fun sometimes. Yes, you have a lot going on. We all do. But save Friday or Saturday night to hit the town with some friends, or have a movie night. Whatever. Bust your ass during the week and give the weekends to yourself. You deserve it.

5. Make a schedule

It's really easy to forget about an assignment, appointment, or group project. Get organized and make weekly a schedule for yourself. It makes your life a lot easier, I promise.

6. Calculate your current grades

Do it now, seriously. This is so you know what to expect when finals come around. How horrible would it be if all this time you thought you had a B, but then right before finals week, you find out you're pushing a low C. Did you forget to turn in an assignment? Was your test grade put in the system wrong? You should be on top of this.

And if its not looking good, go talk to your professors. They don't want to hear your "Can I do something for extra credit" sob story the day before they give you your final exam. They hear that way too often. So please, just get that out of the way now.

7. Relax. Know that summer is just around the corner

We've made it this far, guys. We can finish strong. Keep your s**t together for the last few weeks, and then walk out of finals feeling confident and proud. There's a light at the end of this tunnel, and it is called Summer Break.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
