Holding her husband's hand
webbed with raised blue veins,
she strokes his splotched transparent skin,
not ready to say goodbye.
Eyeing the chords
connecting both her soul mate and machine,
she softly caresses his freckled hand,
thumb circling his marital ring.
Bringing his hand to her lips,
she kisses every finger.
Shutting her eyes, she leans in,
cheek grazing
his grey whiskers.
Her voice cracks next to his ear
struggling
to whisper their song.
And after her delicate kiss
he finally responds
a flatlined, prolonged note.
