Film Review of the Revival of Shakespeare's Globe
Global Good News

The short film on London’s rebuilt Globe Theater was bursting with intriguing information about the physical theater itself as well as the actors, actresses, and directors who make the theater come alive. One of the things that I found so fantastic about this film was that in the very beginning it gave very specific details on the history of rebuilding Shakespeare’s Globe. Many people are not aware that an American actor, Sam Wanamaker, actually initiated the movement that has restored The globe to its formal glory. It is truly a testament to the power of Shakespeare’s work, and the fact that people from all over the world appreciate what Shakespeare did for literature and the acting/drama community. One major theme inside this short film was all of the programs, specifically for children, that the new revived Globe has created. The Globe has acting classes made specially for younger children, and in these classes children are exposed to Shakespeare’s difficult language and verbiage in a fun and interactive way so the children are not as daunted by the original works. This seems extremely profound for the revived Globe because it proves that the people behind the theater are very passionate about keeping Shakespeare alive in their communities, as well as introducing it to children at a young age. It was very interesting to see the people behind the curtains, as well as some of the actors who help keep Shakespeare alive in a modern world that does not always appreciate the culture and history that encompasses so much of what Shakespeare did. Some of the directors included Patrick Spottiswoode director of Globe education, Mark Rylance artistic director, Claire van Kampen director of Theatre Music, and Jenny Tiramani director of Theatre design. Some of the major focal points that the directors touched base on were the relationship between the people on stage and the audience, as well as the physical theater and how a modern audience reacts to it. The “three A’s” were mentioned which stood for audience, architecture, and the acting company. This is crucial because it shows that it isn’t simply the actors and actresses on stage that make the Globe revived. It is also the architecture of the set and the actual theater and how the audience responds to that as well as the acting company that a show at the Globe so magical. It seemed interesting that Claire van Kampen, director of theatre music, mentioned that the audience actually enjoys when it rains over the open roof of the Globe. It is amazing that everything in the Globe, down to the clothing of the Actors as well as the music in the productions is so authentic. The people behind the Globe desire for everything to be as original as possible. William Lyons gave the viewer some information on making the music authentic. He informed the watcher that trumpets and cornets among other instruments were used to authenticate the score of the plays. It is so fantastic that the globe recycles clothes, and it seems quite necessary given the fact that the elaborate dress of Shakespeare’s time is so complex and detailed. Jenny Tiramani mentions that the clothes are all antique or handmade by the Globe, and one of the most essential aspects of the attire were the shoes, which are also handmade by the Globe. The reason that the producers take so much pride in hand making the clothes and shoes was because in Shakespeare’s day “your clothes told the world exactly who you were.” Overall I enjoyed this production and found it useful and informative.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
