It's a new year, and it's a new year filled with exciting possibilities in the movie world.
This year, so many awesome-sounding movies are coming out and my bank account is already crying from the amount of money I'm going to be spending at the theater this year. We have a plethora of options for movie-watchers ranging from cartoon comedies to superheroes to drama to fantasy.
There's too many to talk about in one list of course, so I'm going to focus on the new releases coming in these early winter months.
Without further ado, here's a list of projections and reflections for winter 2017 in film.
THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE (RELEASE DATE FEBRUARY 10): Let's start this list off with the film I'm the most excited for.
The Lego Movie was released in 2014 and became a smash hit with audiences. The sharp, clever humor and writing backed with a fun story and hilarious characters voiced by an all-star cast left an overwhelmingly positive impact on all who saw it. It was a hit with critics too, many of which criticized the Oscars when this movie was passed up for Animated Film of the Year, myself included.
Personally, The Lego Movie is my favorite movie of all time for all the aforementioned reasons and more.
So of course I'm beyond excited for its Batman spin-off.
Featuring the return of highly underrated actor Will Arnett as the voice of Batman, this animated feature is going to focus on Batman's character trying to accept more people in his life when he (accidentally) adopts Robin (voiced by Michael Cera). Also, the Joker (Zach Galifinakis) has busted every single Batman villain out and plans to take over the city with him (including Condiment King and Calendar Man). This description may sound simplistic, but I haven't even covered a lot of the plot elements that are implied in the trailers. In short, it's just going to be an entire movie focused on the hilarious and lovable Batman from The Lego Movie, and, if the trailers are any indication, it's going to be hilarious.
This movie is set to release the same day as Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick: Chapter Two, which sucks for them because I see this movie outgrossing them all.
Of course I could be wrong and there could be more weirdos and action movie junkies out there, but I feel pretty confident about this prediction. After a January that hasn't promised anything exciting, The Lego Batman Movie is going to be the first big hit of 2017.
LOGAN (RELEASE DATE MARCH 3): Ok, fun fact: I don't watch R-rated movies.
It's an old childhood rule that I have sort of adopted into my own personal rule due to the nature of the of severity of the content of R-rated movies.
If there's one movie, though, that could make the best argument for me to change my mind, it would definitely be Deadpool.
But if there was another movie that could also make me change my mind, it would definitely be Logan.
Set to follow the Old Man Logan storyline from the comics, this film is set in the future and focuses on Wolverine as an older man, finally having some signs of age catch up to him possibly due to him losing his healing factor, although this has not been confirmed.
Logan is going to have to come out of brooding seclusion once more in order to defend a young mutant girl at the insistence of Charles Xavier.
And that's pretty much all the info we have.
I may have missed a trailer or two, but so far Fox has been relatively quiet on the storyline of the movie besides the elements so far that I have mentioned.
I do know that the Old Man Logan storyline is set in a dystopian future where the Hulk has gone kind of insane and has taken over the world, having babies with his cousin She-Hulk with which he forms a sort of inbred task force.
Somehow I doubt that the movie is going to follow this storyline to the letter.
I don't doubt however, that this movie will sell well, despite being rated R.
And hey, it's Wolverine, one of the most beloved X Men, in probably one of his last solo films.
And it's Hugh Jackman's last Wolverine performance.
What other motivation do you need?
Unless of course you don't watch R-rated movies.
POWER RANGERS (RELEASE DATE MARCH 24): I missed out on the shows many consider their childhood from the 90's, being born in '97.
I'm kind of glad I did, too, as 90's kids are completely insufferable when it comes to shows and movies they watched as kids.
This is why I'm not talking about the Beauty and the Beast live action remake, since I'm sick of the Disney live action remakes and it's a blatant attempt to draw out 90's nostalgia.
Then again, so is this movie.
Except, judging from the trailer, it actually looks like the filmmakers are going to try something different, as opposed to the Beauty and the Beast team, who just wants to make a shot for shot remake apparently.
It seems, however, the people behind this Power Rangers update are going to try to take the concept of Power Rangers and make it as serious as possible.
I didn't watch Power Rangers as a child as I said before, but from the clips I have seen, it looks like Power Rangers was the most goofy kid show ever.
So you have to admit that this a bit of an odd choice for a theatric release for the franchise.
But I have to admit I'm intrigued.
I don't expect greatness from this, however, I think that the very least this movie can provide is some dumb, self-serious fun with some interesting action.
Will it be worth spending money on? Probably not, which is why I debate seeing it. Will it sell well? Probably not, but 90's nostalgia is a scary thing.
But hey, considering my other options at the time of this release will be the live action Beauty and the Beast or an R rated movie I won't let myself see, it might be worth seeing.
But only if my friends are going.
THE BOSS BABY (RELEASE DATE MARCH 31): It's been awhile since DreamWorks has released a hit movie that isn't a continuation of another one of their franchises, hasn't it?
Last year other than Kung Fu Panda 3 they gave us Trolls, which didn't really sell for audiences or critics.
This year's first release for them, however, is going to be an all-new adventure about an intelligent talking baby.
Those who are having PTSD flashbacks from Baby Geniuses, calm down, this movie looks actually pretty good.
Set to star Alec Baldwin as the voice of the titular baby, The Boss Baby is going to be about a kid who has to welcome a new addition to his family, who turns out to be a completely intelligent, adult-sounding baby dead set on stopping puppies from overtaking babies as the cutest creatures in the world.
Interesting premise I have to admit, although one minor fear I have is that the movie will try to milk Alec Baldwin for all he's worth and focus less on the movie itself.
Other than that, though, this movie has a definite shot at being a hit. A fun premise, voice talent, the sort of animated ridiculisosity that could be refined into a fun movie, The Boss Baby has plenty going for it.
Basically, this movie has the tools it needs to succeed, as long as they are implemented correctly.
As far as box office success, who knows? This movie doesn't appear to be marketed as hard as it could be at the moment, but that doesn't always guarantee box office failure.
It's tough to tell with this movie, but one thing's for sure: if it fails, we've got way more awesome movies coming in 2017.
It'll be an interesting few early months in film, with chances for surprise hits all around.
Who knows what's going to happen?
