Being a Film Major is Like

The film life, man. I tell you.

Being a film major has its perks. Also its disadvantages. Sometimes hard and sometimes frustrating. But, hey, it's a part of life. What can we do about it? We wanted to go down this career path, so, this is what we deal with.

1. You just can't watch movies anymore, you always analyze them

For real. Having more knowledge and knowing how things are done, you can’t help but to analyze every detail and annoy everyone else because they’re like “shut up!”

2. Getting asked "What's your favorite movie/TV show?!"

Stop. Please. It's hard to choose. There's so many good ones.

3. Behind the scenes footage

I just love watching behind the scenes stuff. It interests me and I love learning all the secrets, too.

4. The camera obsession is real

There has been plenty of times I went to Target and just ran to the camera section to look at them when with friends and then all the cameras in the equipment room. We just love camera’s, okay! Bring me to any place that has cameras and I will just stare at them.

5. Editing

When you expect to edit one little five minute video and to be done, it takes longer then expected. You need that perfect sequence. It gets frustrating after a while!

6. Being sore from carrying equipment

There’s some heavy things we have to carry around. It’s a workout and you always get sore from lugging it to locations.

7. Long shoot days

There has been plenty of times where I was on a film shoot and we did 12 hour days, eight hour days. Just long days. We have a lot of scenes to get done, and there’s always multiple takes we have to do.

8. Bouncing ideas off of each other

It’s good to bounce ideas off of one another. It gets your creativeness going. It’s always good to get a second opinion on an idea for a script and how to improve it.

9. When your professors also work in the field

They tell us what happens. They share their wisdom. The stories they experienced. How they got to where they are now. Maybe we can actually work on a set with them one day.

10. Writers block

Nothing is worse than writers block for scripts. Especially for class.

11. Wanting internships

We want the experience. We need it. We need to get into the industry. We need money!

12. Worrying about jobs

With film, as well as other majors, we have to worry about finding a job in the industry. We can’t just go out and be like: “Hey! Hire me! I need a job!” It’s more like: “Jump through hoops. That are on fire. THEN you can get a job.” Or as long as you know someone.

The film life is an experience. It really is. I wouldn't change it for the world.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
