2015 brought one of the greatest indie video games that year and to some, of all time. This video game is Toby Fox's Undertale. The RPG (role playing game) has classic 8-bit style, an incredible soundtrack (which is available for download), and three different ways to play: neutral, true pacifist, or true genocide. No matter which way you play, the video game is filled with witty humor, a touch of horror, and wonderful morals.
The game opens with the story of a day when monsters and humans used to roam the earth peacefully, until one day they sparked a war that caused the monsters to be sealed in the Underground for all time.
The only entrance is through a mountain and down a hole which the player finds them self at. You create your character's name, but you cannot customize the character and it is purposefully gender neutral in appearance. A flower welcomes you and tells you that the only way to survive in this world is to "Kill or BE KILLED" to which a cow like monster named Tauriel saves you and shows you the ways of what this puzzle game will be like.
The aim of the game overall is to escape the Underground, but it is up to you to decide how you will proceed through it and face the King, Asgore. You do not have to kill every monster you see, but you also don't have to spare them. There is always a choice that you, the gamer, must make with every foe you encounter. You can dance with a slime, pet a dog or whisper your secrets to a knight; or you can kill them all.
However, there are always consequences for whichever path you take. Each path reveals a different aspect of the game and unveils the true story behind the world and its monsters. In this game, you are a special human who is always "filled with determination." It is this determination that refills your health at every checkpoint and what keeps you alive every time something kills you.
The game features an incredible cast of characters that are filled with puns, great morals, and are always willing to be your friend first and your enemy as the very VERY last resort. The monsters in this game, except for a few, may be frightening in appearance, but never truly want to hurt you. Even Papyrus (yes named after the font) wants to capture you as a human to take to Asgore but ends up wanting to be your friend more than he wants to be your enemy. His brother, Sans (named after comic sans), constantly wants to help you to be a better person, even when you are facing him at the end of the genocide run. The characters are filled with heart that make you as attached to them as they are to you.
This game may not be as fabulous if it wasn't for the music. There is music in every different world, for every boss you fight, and if there is a lack of it, something is horribly wrong. The music shows that the world is alive and although it is dark and gloomy, there is still the vibrancy of the monsters living in it. The only time there will purposefully be no music, is if you have killed every monster in that area of the world and then it is truly frightening. It sets the mood for every place you are in and makes the boss fights feel even more epic than they already are.
Another added bonus to this game is that the character is completely gender neutral. The names of the character that your character is based on either could be Frisk or Chara, depending on if you do true pacifist or true genocide. Both of these characters go by the pronoun they and the only difference in their appearance is that Chara has a green striped shirt instead of blue and purple. (Also, there is a adorable lesbian couple that is revealed in the true pacifist mode: you go on a date that ends up failing but succeeds in creating a great friendship instead.)
You are the maker of your destiny in Undertale. You choose what will happen to you. No matter what, you will always be filled with DETERMINATION.
You can buy Undertale for $10 on Steam, and for another $10 you can also buy the soundtrack. Compatible for Mac and PC.
