We are what we eat. We are what we put in our bodies. In that case, I would be a mixture of Dove chocolate, chai tea and Panera baguettes. On a more serious note, what we feed ourselves is crucial; soul food is highly nutritious. What we feed or tell ourselves can make or break us.
Your mind will always believe everything you tell it. Feed it faith. Feed it truth. Feed it love.
But how do we make sure we are filling up with soul food, rather than something unhealthy?
Social Media Cleanse
One way to stop feeding your body, mind and soul unhealthiness is to do a social media cleanse. I did this a while ago, but I think a social media cleanse needs to happen more than just once.
We are caught up in a world where we follow people on social media that have an aesthetically pleasing Instagram profile, that are exceptionally attractive, or they have an intriguing lifestyle (fitness, fashion, etc.) that you aspire to have one day. Trust me, I followed those people. And yes, I found myself stalking their social media, constantly comparing myself to them. It was so unhealthy.
I stepped back one day and asked myself, “Why do I find myself looking at their social media way too often?” I came to the conclusion that I was comparing myself and my lifestyle to theirs; consistently thinking what I can do to be more like them.
So do a social media cleanse. Don’t worry, this isn’t getting rid of all of the people you know. Go to who you follow and take a look at who you give your attention to. Then ask yourself why do you really follow them. If you find yourself comparing yourself to them in any way shape or form, help yourself and unfollow them. This is nothing against them, this is for you. Stop wishing you had that lifestyle, that body or that face. If a post makes you tear yourself apart, you need to cleanse.
You may start out by only unfollowing a couple profiles, that was me at first. But I soon decided that in order to feel my best, I need to do myself a favor. I ended up unfollowing over 50 accounts not because I didn’t like them, but because I didn’t like how I felt when I saw their posts on my feed.
You don’t want to feed your body, mind and soul comparison. It’s definitely unhealthier than my Dove chocolates I stress eat.
Other ways to feed yourself with true soul food:
Reading a good and fulfilling book
Finding a favorite quote
Finding a new verse
Listening to uplifting music
Surround yourself with who you think will help you grow
Stay in and veg, me time is always fulfilling
Spend time with your family
Reading the Word of the Lord
It will take time and it will take some tender, love and care, but being sure to feed yourself soul food is so rewarding. But before you feed anything to your soul, study its ingredients. If it doesn’t nourish your soul, then simply get rid of it.
p.s. reading your bible while eating Dove chocolate is double the soul food ;)
