Once the thrill of pumpkin spice dies, you realize the cold winter days are not too far ahead. And while Christmas and New Years Eve are exciting things to look forward to, the lack of sunshine may make this time harder for people who deal with seasonal depression. So, here are ten ways to kick seasonal depression's booty!
1. Spend time outside
While it is tempting to stay inside when it is cold and cloudy outside, the fresh air and little bits of daylight will help keep you feeling good. Also, opt to keep your blinds open to get as much natural light as possible.
2. Vitamin D
A lot of people who struggle with seasonal depression are Vitamin D deficient. Usually, the sun provides us with this nutrient, but it leaves us hanging in the winter. So grab a Vitamin D supplement from the store (they even have chocolate ones) to keep your mind and body balanced and healthy. If you tend to get sick a lot too, grab some Vitamin C, as well!
3. Talk, talk, talk
Going through a rough time is never easier on your own. You're not annoying, dramatic, or weird. I know it is hard to reach out for help, but it is so important. Talk to your friends, your family, a therapist, or the pizza delivery guy-- I promise it will lift some weight off your shoulders.
4. Aromatherapy
I'm a huge advocate of essential oils relieving anxiety. Try a "stress less" blend with lavender, citrus, or mint. You can put them on your temples or add a drop to your bath, and the soothing scents will positively influence the area of your brain that controls your mood.
5. Exercise
I know some of you will want to skip right over this one. When it is cold outside or you're feeling down and stressed, it is hard to stay motivated to go to the gym. However, exercising (especially close to a window) keeps you all around healthy and alleviates some of the symptoms that come along with seasonal depression. Plus, colleges offer tons of fun fitness classes. Grab a friend and try something new! Don't forget to eat your fruits and veggies too; they'll boost your energy and control mood swings.
6. Write
Keeping a journal will allow you to express yourself and let go of negative feelings. Googling pictures of puppies is also scientifically proven to help.
7. Sleep
Getting enough sleep is essential to a happy, healthy life. Don't skip out on those nighttime Zzz's.
8. Have fun
It is easy to get in a routine or skip out on fun social things when you are feeling depressed. But forcing yourself to get off campus, spend time with your friends, or do something new will make you feel so much lighter.
9. Meditation
I know it sounds cheesy, but breathing exercises and spending time without your phone is proven to help with depression and anxiety. Find a 5-minute guided meditation on youtube or turn on your favorite song, and just relax and let go of negative thoughts. You may find that deleting social media or other toxic people, things, or addictions in your life will help as well.
10. 1-800-273-8255
If it gets to the point where you feel like you can't go on, please make the call. There are too many dogs that still need petted, too many places you haven't seen, too many people you haven't met, and too many Jeni's ice cream flavors you have yet to try. You are worth it, you are loved, you are strong, and things will get better. I promise.
Strive to be your own ray of sunshine.
