In 2012 a girl group called Fifth Harmony was formed on the singing competition television show, the X-Factor, by Simon Cowell. They ended up coming in third place and were signed to a record label regardless. These girls all auditioned with hopes of being solo artists and were put in a group in order to continue the competition. At the time, they were ecstatic and thankful for the opportunity to continue on. They recognized that being in a group with four other girls was a blessing. Now, after five years and incredible success, this gratitude is not felt by one of the original members, Camila Cabello.
I discovered Fifth Harmony in 2013 and have supported them ever since. I've helped promote their songs, been to many of their concerts, and have even paid to meet them. Their sister-like bond and love for each other are what originally drew me in. Slowly, their dynamic started to fall apart and the obvious cause was Camila. While being in the group, Camila released two songs outside of Fifth Harmony. Fans started noticing something was off between the girls and Camila around the same time she released her first song aside from the group.
Even though I did notice the tension between them, I had hope that she would stay in Fifth Harmony. This hope stemmed from those five girls I became obsessed with years ago. They loved each other unconditionally, supported one another, and dreamed of success for Fifth Harmony. That's what made them great and that's what fans want from a group. This is why Dinah Jane, Lauren, Ally, and Normani will be perfectly fine now that Camila has officially left.
Camila's obvious distaste for being in the group and lack of passion for Fifth Harmony's overall success was the only thing stopping them from reaching their full potential. When Camila made the decision to leave, she thought that the other four girls wouldn't be able to go on without her. This was not the case whatsoever.
Fifth Harmony is only their best when they're all focused and truly working towards the success of the group as a whole. With Camila gone, this unity is achieved automatically. And the girls proved it during their first performance as a four-piece during the 2017 People's Choice Awards. They performed their biggest hit yet, Work From Home. During the opening line that previously belonged to Camila, all four girls sang in unison. They also changed the lyrics from "I ain't worried 'bout nothing, I ain't worried bout nada" to "We ain't worried 'bout nothing, we ain't worried bout nada." This symbolized their unification despite losing a member, which should've been a major setback.
A group where every single member is dedicated to the prosperity of the band as a whole will never be broken. That's why Camila leaving Fifth Harmony helped the girls, not harmed them. I look forward to see what 2017 holds for Dinah Jane, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke Hernandez, and Normani Kordei.
