The long-running USA Network show, Psych, has been and always will be one of my all time favorite TV shows. Sadly, it has a very specific following, and not a lot of people know about it. It's highly underrated and does not earn the credit it deserves. Here are 15 reasons you should watch it.
1. The entire series is on Netflix
Easy access. There's no excuse not to watch it now.
2. The concept itself is funny
Psych is about the son of a retired police officer who convinces the Santa Barbara Police Department he is a psychic because he notices small details the cops don't. He and his childhood best friend open a psychic detective agency and hilarity ensues. It's basically a modern-day Sherlock Holmes. Shawn, the "psychic," is a master of deduction and his partner, Gus, is a pharmaceutical sales rep (that's kinda like a doctor, right?).
3. The leading men aren't bad looking
Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster are played by James Roday and Dulé Hill.
4. If you're not into dudes, Maggie Lawson is pretty hot too
Look at those eyes
5. Every episode is laugh out loud funny
Psych is one of the few shows that can make me laugh every time I watch it. The writers brilliantly crafted every hour-long episode with fireball wit, quick comebacks, and off-color jokes perfectly delivered by the actors.
6. The characters
The characters on Psych are all original and uniquely funny. Shawn and Gus are the main comedians of the show, but the character of Carlton Lassiter is also objectively hilarious.
7. Essentially every episode has a death
If you're not into all the jokes, almost every episode centers on someone's death which Shawn and Gus always remain surprisingly calm about.
8. The running jokes
There are several running jokes, gags, catchphrases, etc. to look at for in Psych. Some of the most popular including: "Gus don't be's," Shawn introducing Gus by anything other than his name, Gus being mistaken for Bud from The Cosby Show, "I've heard it both ways"
9. The Pineapple
Along with the running jokes, there is said to be a pineapple shown or referenced in every episode of Psych.
10. The references
Shawn and Gus grew up in the 80s so there are constant references to popular 80s movies, celebrities, and songs. Apart from the 80s, there are plenty of other obscure yet specific references in the show, usually when Shawn is having a "psychic episode" or comparing a current situation to a cult classic. Not to mention, there are plenty of themed episodes!
11. The guest stars
Every member of The Breakfast Club (except Emilio Estevez) has made an appearance on Psych. And William Shatner, Cary Elwes, Kerry Washington, Curt Smith, John Cena, Kenan Thompson, Jaleel White, Wayne Brady, George Takei, Cybill Shepherd, and Tim Curry to name a few others.
12. The Drama
If you're not here for the jokes, there's certainly a fair share of drama in this show. Most of the police business is played for laughs, but there are definitely some more serious moments. Especially between Shawn and his dad.
13. There's a musical episode
The last season premiered with a full-length musical episode with all the characters singing and dancing. Plus, Anthony Rapp from Rent guest starred.
14. Real life romance
Aside from their will-they-won't-they relationship onscreen, James Roday and Maggie Lawson are a couple in real life. Awwww!
15. The friendship
Even though it's fictional, the friendship between Shawn and Gus really makes me happy. I mean, if this doesn't make you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside, I don't know what will.
Now go watch some Psych, or else you will be available to suck it.
