I’ve dealt with anxiety and anxiety attacks since I was in middle school, and it was never easy for me. I always had to deal with sweaty palms, a rapid heartbeat, and a shaky voice. I worried about all kinds of things from having to be somewhere at a certain time, to having an interview for my first job. It was exhausting for me.
I was tired of hearing people say “Oh, just do your best”, “You don’t have to be perfect”, “Quit worrying about everything”. Trust me, I’ve tried to think positive thoughts and tell myself there is no point in being nervous, but it didn’t help at all.
However, throughout the years, I’ve learned a few tricks that help with my anxiety and thought I would share them with others who deal with anxiety as well.
1. Start Up A Hobby
About a year ago, I began writing out my day’s events and thoughts in a journal. The feel of a pen in my fingers and the paper beneath my hand comforts me and allows me to release stress from that day. Finding something that you enjoy doing will preoccupy your mind and help forget about your worries.
2. Stay Hydrated
Anxiety takes a toll on your body and if you’re not hydrated, it can make your anxiety even worse. My freshman year in college, I had an anxiety attack and fainted in the cafeteria. I had to be rushed to the hospital and the doctor told me that my anxiety attack was more severe due to dehydration. Since then, I have made a note to drink more water each day.
3. Exercise
I understand this may not be something everyone likes to hear, but it truly does help. Exercising each day will tire the body and reduce tension. Also, working out burns away stress hormones and releases endorphins that will improve your mood. Since I began working out, I have noticed a considerable difference in my mood.
4. Be Around People You Trust
Since graduating high school, I’ve kept my friend group quite small, focusing more on quality than quantity. Those friends and I have built trust, and that trust helps me to feel comfortable when around them. Surrounding yourself with those you trust will help you to relax, and talking with them about various topics can help get your mind off of your worries.
5. Lastly, Let It All Out
Sometimes the best thing for you to do is grab a pillow and scream into it. Not only will it help release tension in your body, but it is also a bit fun.
I hope these tips help with your anxiety!
