Well, we have officially seen both of our presidential candidates go head to head in the first debate (if you can even call it that.) And let me just ask the open question, is anybody else as disgusted as I am? Honestly, each party should take a long, hard look at itself, and after that, be eternally ashamed that they would ever throw their support behind each of the individual candidates. All that being said, here are a few things I took away from the presidential debate.
1.) The obvious, this is easily the worst election in recent history. Say what you want about each of the candidates, you can try to support them or try to attack them: the fact of the matter is, half of the country is more disillusioned with the political process now than they were before election season began, and that is saying something.
2.) I have been using this analogy for Donald Trump all along: he is like an athlete who shows fleeting, short moments of potential, but then reverts back to his former self. I will sit here and honestly say, I think there were some moments at the beginning of the debate where Trump almost made himself presidential, but then proceeded for the rest of the debate, at least in my eyes, to show how perpetually insane he actually is. If he wants to be president, then he better prove that he can actually handle it and not be so rattled by what everybody may say.
3.) Hillary is the exact career politician that Trump has accused her of being. She has her flaws, no doubt there. She has flip-flopped on issues time and again, and I do think she presents numerous trust issues to the American people. If she wants to be president, she really needs to show that her baggage does not show how she will act during her potential presidency.
4.) Both of these candidates are exactly as flawed as we think they are. Hillary called out Trump regarding his accusation that China invented global warming, and then he denied it and deleted his tweet where he said exactly that. On the other hand, Trump has plenty of standing to attack Hillary, her flip-flopping views, and her spotty record.
This is by far the worst election season we have seen in quite awhile. Both parties had four, arguably eight years to search for and put forward the best possible candidate. Neither of them have done that. To be honest, this comes back to the behavior that both parties have shown in recent years. It created the current situation, and these candidates are simply a symptom of the problem. I seriously hope that America uses this election as a wake up call, and I can honestly say, I am extremely disappointed that we allowed ourselves to get to this point. It is time for us to make an honest change.
