A Few Reasons Why Life Is So Good

Sometimes I still think it’s crazy that I’m a college student. That it’s been three whole years since I’ve graduated high school. That I’m a human capable of going to class, going to work, paying rent, making my own meals and doing everything else the grown up world has thrown at me. It's crazy that life is flying by and there's barely enough time for me to stop and take it in. But the craziest thing of all? Life is good, and I couldn't be happier.

Life is good because I have a family who supports me through everything. I get to be who I want, do what I want, make my own decisions and, whether good or bad, they love my relentlessly. When I decide to slap an entire trip to Australia on a credit card, they don’t bat an eye. They trust me to do what I need to, forgive me when I’m not the angel they think I am, and are always more than proud of me when I am.

Life is good because I get to live with two of my best friends. They’re who I get to see first thing in the morning and right before I go to bed. They make me laugh when I’m feeling down and they laugh at my dumb jokes to bring me up. It’s basically like a never ending sleepover when you get to room with two of your besties in college.

Life is good because I have the opportunity to learn what I want to learn. In high school we always said, “When am I ever going to use any of this in the real world?!” And we realize now that the answer to that question is close to never. But in college, I get to pick what I learn about it. Paying to do so isn’t all that fun, but, nonetheless, I enjoy my education because it’s what I’m learning about what I what to learn about.

Life is good because I have a job. Working is by far not the most fun thing in the world. Hell, it’s probably one of my least favorite pastimes. But having a job instead of having my parents pay my rent and everything else in life is teaching me one of the greatest lessons in the world: the value of the dollar. I appreciate the money I make and I manage it phenomenally.

Life is good because I’m healthy. I’ll admit I don’t always take care of myself the way I should, and that shows up through a cold or the flu every now and again, but it’s nothing that stops me from getting up in the morning every day and easily living life, except for the snooze button, that is.

Life is good for a million reasons. Take a moment today and stop to realize a few of the simple things that make you happy. Seeing the sun come up. Falling asleep with a blanket over your body and a pillow under your head. Getting a greeting from your dog at the end of the day. The simple things are what pass us by the most, but the simple things are what make life so good.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
