It's already March and Spring is definitely in the air, but more importantly, it's arguably the best time for new beginnings. Since the flowers are sprouting up getting ready to bloom in the Spring sun, there's no better time to sprout a new version of yourself! There's no better feeling than breaking old habits and creating new, productive habits in support of a new, productive Spring lifestyle. So if the reemerging sun has you feeling inspired and if you missed the New Year's Resolution train like I did, here are a few things you can think about giving up today:
Sleeping in:
I know, I love to sleep, too, but the feeling of going to bed early and starting your day early feeling well-rested after a fresh night's sleep is unmatched. Studies have shown that those who start their day earlier and have a solid, productive morning routine are more successful. Individuals like Michelle and Barack Obama, Tony Robbins and Winston Churchill all have or had productive morning routines.
Talking about other people:
While it's something none of us would like to admit we do, it's true that we all have talked about someone behind their back, and not necessarily in a positive way. When we talk about others with negativity, that negativity is brought back on us. Like my grandma always says, when someone talks badly about you behind your back, it says more about them than it does about you. So rise above the gossip, and find value in true conversation that isn't demeaning to those who aren't around to defend themselves.
Reading cards just for money:
Have you ever opened a birthday or other kind of holiday card, grabbed the check or bill and shut the card, without even reading the message? We all have, and we all should probably stop doing that. If you've ever gotten someone a card, spent a good amount of time picking out the exact card, getting just the right message, perfectly inscribing the most beautiful letter on the inside, just for someone to throw out it once they got the money or gift included? That's not really enjoyable or fulfilling for either party, so next time you get a card, value the interpersonal message more than the monetary gift.
Going on your phone during dinner:
While it doesn't happen too often, it's pretty common to be at dinner or lunch with someone and while you're trying to enjoy their valued company, they're only really concerned with what's going on Instagram. Everyone has been on either side of this situation, and while it is frustrating, it's more of a loss to both sides. Enjoying a face-to-face personal connection is more valuable than any post on Instagram, so remember that next time you're at dinner.
