It’s strange how a single event can ignite a movement. The death of Michael Brown in 2014 created a powerful movement in America. Michael Brown became everyone’s son, nephew or brother. His death caused so much unrest in the small Missouri city and across the nation. Protestors poured out on to the street and every media outlet in the country turned its eyes to this 18 year old african american boy that was shot and killed by a white police officer. While the media has turned from Ferguson onto stories about the newest I-phone or Donald Trumps’ latest debacle many have not forgotten about what occurred that August. Even now a famous Ferguson activist named Darren Seals was found dead in a burned vehicle. Seals defined himself as a “revolutionary, activist, and unapologetically black”.
Remembering Ferguson isn't only about the tragedy that occurred there but about what it represents. Racism in America is a very real and serious concern. Unfortunately, it’s easy to brush it off until someone gets killed. We cannot say for certain whether racism was the defining factor in these cases but regardless there are people who have died. Ferguson was a starting point that made stories like Alton Sterlings or Philando Castile even more prominent. So don't forget about what happened on that day in Missouri because what happened there has started a narrative that will change America.
