We all need a little girl power in our lives, and lately I've seen tons of songs coming out that go with feminist themes. So here are some songs (new and older) to make you feel more empowered!
1. "Fall in Line" by Christina Aguilera ft. Demi Lovato
This song also just recently came out and combines the talents of Christina Aguilera (a queen of the 90's) and Demi Lovato (a queen of the 2000's) to create an ultimate girl power collaboration! Both are pop divas and vocal gymnasts, so this song was destined for greatness no matter what they were singing about.
But I love how they went with the theme of the oppression of women and breaking free of it for the song. It made this collaboration even more epic.
Empowering lyrics: "Maybe it's never gonna change / But I got a mind to show my strength / And I got a right to speak my mind"
2. "Girl Power" by The Cheetah Girls
If you grew up in my generation, this song should be nostalgic for you. I love the Cheetah Girls. The movies might be cheesy, but they were a huge part of the childhoods of millions. (And if you try to tell me that you didn't get together with a bunch of your friends and pretend to be them, you're lying.)
"Girl Power" is exactly what the title says. It's catchy, nostalgic, and uplifting.
Empowering lyrics: "You better stand up if you know just who you are / Never give up / Never stay down / Girl power"
3. "God is a woman" by Ariana Grande
This is one of the aforementioned feminist anthems that have come out within the past few weeks. I love how though the song is about sex, she doesn't refer to sex as something dirty. Female sexuality is described as godly and something to be celebrated rather than shamed.
Also, the music video is expertly done, with females replacing traditionally male figures in classic art, accentuating how women can do anything a man can.
Empowering lyrics: "And I can be all the things you told me not to be / When you try to come for me, I keep on flourishing / And he see the universe when I'm in company / It's all in me"
4. "Woman Up" by Charlene Kaye
This is the only obscure artist I have on this list. Charlene Kaye (or as she goes by now, KAYE) was inspired by Beyoncé to write a breakup anthem designed to empower women, and it really delivers!
I love how it urges us to "woman up" instead of "man up," because women don't have to "man up" in order to be strong.
Empowering lyrics: "Girl you've got to woman up / Get your rainbow off the rug / And start anew"
"Perfect" by Pink
Frankly, I never listened very had to the lyrics of this song, so I was shocked when I realized it wasn't a love song, but in fact an empowering song about self-acceptance and ignoring critics.
It doesn't have to be about feminism to you, but to many people, this song is a woman reaching out to other women, telling them that they are perfect despite the haters.
Empowering lyrics: "Oh, pretty, pretty please, don't you ever, ever feel / Like you're less than, less than perfect / Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel like you're nothing / You are perfect to me"
6. "Woman" by Kesha
Warning, there is a lot of profanity in this song, so if that is something that bothers you, don't listen.
This song doesn't have a deep meaning and it doesn't have to. It's just Kesha saying that she doesn't need a man to take care of her and that she's going to have a great time with her girls! It's the perfect girls' night jam.
Empowering lyrics: "These diamond rings, my automobiles / Everything I got, I bought it / Boys can't buy my love, buy my love"
7. "Run the World (Girls)" by Beyoncé
I couldn't make a girl power list without this song. Queen Bey has been making hit after hit for decades now, showing us how girls can run the world.
"Boy you know you love it / How we're smart enough / To make these millions / Strong enough to bare the children"
