Feminism's Silence Toward Taylor Swift

On Monday, August 7. Taylor Swift's trial against David Mueller started. If you don't know much about the trial, that's okay. I'll enlighten you.

Back in 2013 during the RED tour in Denver, Colorado, Taylor was doing meet and greets. During the meet and greets, a DJ and his girlfriend came in, got a photo, and left. But in those few moments that Taylor had with these people, her world changed. David Mueller, the DJ touched her bare bottom under her dress.

After the incident, Taylor told her mom what had happened. Of course, the Swift family wanted to keep the matter private, so they didn't take it to the police. Instead, they took it to KYGO, the radio station Mueller was working at, at the time. Mueller was soon fired and chose to sue Taylor for $3M. Hence why Taylor is in court today. Do you want to know the cool part? Taylor is counter suing for only $1.

I can't even tell you how many times I've seen the same thing on social media that Taylor is the one who is taking him to court, but it's the other way around. But we all know how the internet is, right? They love and support everyone until it comes to Taylor Swift. She's the one exception to the rule for everything. It's simply cool to hate Taylor Swift.

It's even cool for the feminists. Isn't that interesting? Feminists love empowering other women but when it comes to Taylor Swift, they are no longer feminists. Which is why I will always believe that feminists have a double standard because modern day feminists don't really seem to be about supporting other women they don't like. If you don't believe me, here are the facts:

Remember Kesha's case? She was going to court against Dr. Luke and it had seemed like every woman in the world was standing up for her, supporting her, and sending out tweets and posts in support. It was all about empowerment and supporting the victim of sexual assault.

People (Gaga, Adele) even spoke out in support of Kesha on stage. The feminist empowerment was alive and well during all of this. Taylor even did something to show her support. She donated money. But of course, that wasn't enough for the feminists. Is it ever enough when it comes to Taylor Swift? Nope. Everyone shamed Taylor for her donation, including the 'I want to empower other women', Demi Lovato.

These are Demi's words, which are nice, right? Wrong. After Taylor donated the money, Lovato went on a rant, and said something like this: Lovato Tweeted “Take something to Capitol Hill or actually speak out about something and then I’ll be impressed.” It wasn't just Lovato who had this attitude. Every one did. Why? Because for whatever reason, Taylor will never win, no matter what she does.

Every one rips her apart for being 'silent,' when she's never actually silent. She was ripped apart for not speaking up about the election, ripped apart when she tweeted about the Women's March, ripped apart for writing about her feelings, oh and did we mention, she's also ripped apart for being human.

This brings me to my point. When it comes time for feminists to speak up in support for Taylor, they don't. All I hear is crickets. Silence. Don't you? I know I'm not the only one.

We don't know, Samantha. Maybe their internet broke down or they lost all ability to type. Perhaps that's why no one is saying a single thing. This is why I have a problem with feminism because of things like this. I can't stand back and be silent when a girl who was sexually assaulted is not getting the support she probably needs from other women.

Do you know why Taylor counter sued? So she can be an example for other women and to let them know that it's okay to say no. It's okay to fight. So, before you go and hate on her for paying the 'victim' card or whatever it is you're about to do, stop. She is not doing this for album promotion (what album would she even be promoting? She hasn't announced anything), being a victim or for money. She's doing this to be an example, unlike all the other feminists out there that aren't saying anything. T

This is a serious thing that Taylor is dealing with right now. Not only her but her entire family. Did you know her mom was in tears yesterday when she testified? She stated that she wants to "vomit and cry" at the same time. Does that sound like someone who's just helping her daughter gain attention? Taylor was emotional as well, which proves my point all the more. Taylor Alison Swift is doing an incredible thing and not one person is saying anything about apart from her fans, her haters, and the media. That's a problem.

Perhaps I missing something though. Perhaps I'm not understanding the true meaning of feminism. I just thought that feminists were about empowering other women and speaking out against misogyny and defending other women in the process. But, I guess I was wrong. I guess that isn't feminism at all.

Feminism appears to be empowering others until it's Taylor Swift. Once Taylor Swift gets brought up, feminism doesn't exist. It's really quite terrible the way this woman is being treated. It's almost making me not want her to put out an album this year because if she does, it'll spark more hate that shouldn't even be there in the first place.

Sexual assault is a serious issue and one that many deal with on a daily basis. It doesn't matter if you're rich, poor or famous. If you're sexually assaulted, it's wrong. This is the time where feminists should be standing up and empowering others but they aren't. It makes me wonder who the real feminist is here. Is it those who claim they are on social media or is Taylor Alison Swift?

Taylor wins this battle. Why? Because she's showing every young girl who looks up to her with adoring eyes and even the ones who don't that they can say no and that you don't have to take the abuse. She's showing everyone who mocks her for her dating life that it will not be tolerated anymore. She's not only standing up for herself, she's standing up for you. What are you doing?

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
