I'm Dropping the "F-Bomb"

You are not a true feminist if you're expressing negativity toward men or other women, period.

Despite years of efforts by feminists to strengthen women's rights, one clear problem remains: women and men are still not equal.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women still make less than men. In fact, they earn 77 cents for every dollar a man earns, despite the fact that women hold just as many jobs as men.

The definition of the word "feminist" has been misinterpreted for years, holding a negative connotation that has caused many people - men and women alike - to run away from the feminist label rather than toward. But as a modern society, it is important to embrace feminism and to bring the misconceptions about it to an end.

In 2014, actress Emma Watson reinforced the idea behind changing the way we see the word in a speech to the UN supporting her campaign, HeForShe. Watson discussed the many misconceptions about feminism, such as the false belief that being a feminist means putting men down, being aggressive and being a dominant woman.

I'm going to call out a major misconception right now: women who claim to be feminists but then show negativity or hatred toward other women or men are simply NOT true feminists.

In reality, these ideas about feminism are simply not true. Rather than often shaming others for not being feminists, one should politely educate and inform others about the movement and its goals, then kindly extend an invitation to join.

The truth behind feminism is that men are encouraged to join women in the fight for equality.

"Men—I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation," Watson said in her speech. "Gender equality is your issue, too."

Rather than some people oppressing feminists and putting them down, they should help women rise to equality, spreading awareness and promoting a better understanding of what it truly means to be a feminist.

Feminism is not just about "girl power;" rather, it's aimed toward equality and respect for both women and men. Many men have the misconception that feminists are trying to overthrow men and take over the world.

The truth is that women simply demand equal rights. They cannot, however, reach that goal without the help of men.

We need men to embrace the "F-word." The more men there are, who can proudly call themselves feminists, the more impact the feminist movement will have on creating equal rights for women.

Watson's HeForShe campaign is the perfect starting point in the push for seeing men and women on the same playing field.

"Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive," Watson said. "Both men and women should feel free to be strong… It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum, not as two opposing sets of ideas."

So listen up, men: it's time to change the way you view feminists. Get on board, and join the movement because this is not about competition, this is about teamwork.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
