Beyoncé may believe and try to convince us that girls run the world, but sadly at Penn State and other schools where Greek life has a strong present, this isn't the case. Boys control the whole social scene. They decide who they social with. They decide which sororities are "good," and in doing so, they control the tiers. Greek life is a fantasy world of a never-ending high school and it needs to change.
Feminism is equal rights for men and women.
Greek life definitely does not portray this, seeing as how the males are pretty much in charge of all social gatherings. They choose who they want in their houses for socials, late night and anything else. An invite to frat.
I consider myself a feminist. I love advocating for women's rights. I don't let anyone make misogynistic comments without hearing me back. Honestly, I'm surprised I rushed considering my stance on feminism. I believe women should have all of the same rights as men and I hate that frat guys have so much more control than sorority girls in the Greek community.
Sororities are an excellent way to get involved on campus and become a leader within the sorority and within your community. You form a bond with other women that you will find no place else. Sororities are all about empowering women to go on and do amazing things with their lives, but sadly Greek life at Penn State does not portray this.
We are so worried about what our male counterparts and what they think of us, that we are often held back from achieving our true potential, and that shouldn't be. We need to reevaluate our Greek life. Go back to women feeling empowered and feeling like they can do anything.
I love being in a sorority. I love my sisters and I am so appreciative of all of the opportunities my sorority has afforded me. However, I still believe things can improve. I hope to one day live in a world where boys treat girls with respect and as equals. I would not give up my sisterhood for anything, but I do wish that we fe;t as though we were equals in the Greek community. I don't know how to bring about this change, but it needs to come soon.
