The female version of the movie "Ghostbusters" came out last year. It didn't rate very well at the box office, despite having many famous movie stars in it. Even though I really anticipated seeing it, I didn't get a chance to see it when it originally came out in theaters. I had the chance to watch it recently and was surprised at the lack of audience. It was a very clever remake. I was never a huge fan of the original franchise, but I really enjoyed the remake. Maybe that makes me a little bias. Either way, I felt it was an impressive remake. It was basically the epitome of female empowerment, while still retaining components of the original piece.
1. Kate McKinnon's character was wonderfully hilarious.
Kate Mckinnon was perfect for such a comedic character. She portrayed the character Jillian Holtzmann, an entertaining and quirky character. She creates many awesome weapons for the Ghostbusters to combat ghosts with, all the while acting perfectly insane. It was a nice change to see a female character who was portrayed with the "mad genius" persona. It was neat to see a female character create the weapons that were going to be used in the movie, especially when she did so with a slightly crazy sort of excitement.
2. Chris Hemsworth as the lovable dumb blonde.
This was such a change from most movies. Usually, movies portray young blonde women as dumb and annoying. In this film, Chris Hemsworth was the young dumb blonde. This alone would be extremely appealing, however, what really captured my attention was the fact they didn't maliciously portray a dumb blonde. They depicted him in a way that was comedic and enjoyable. One of the worst things in movies is whenever they depict people as being annoying just because they're not the brightest. You don't have to be a genius to be sweet or likable. Even though intelligence is a good quality to have, you can still be a good person without it. This movie was a good portrayal of that. It also pointed out the obvious sexism in Hollywood, by depicting a male as dumb and blonde in order to showcase how sparse that happens in movies.
3. The references to the original.
Throwing in some of the actors from the original movie helped maintain the essence of the original story. It's still a comedy about ghost hunting. People who hate on the movie take life way too seriously. Enjoy the comedy relief and have fun spotting the little references to the original movie. Also, enjoy the nostalgia of seeing the original actors after they aged. It's a nice throwback.
4. The action scenes.
For the most part, the action scenes were comical. Melissa McCarthy's character being possessed by a ghost was quite funny, as was everyone's reaction to this. They were able to keep a continuous line of action packed adventure without taking themselves too seriously. Everything was still very amusing. Surprisingly, they even threw in splashes of rebellious kick butt fight scenes. Kate McKinnon's character probably had the most action packed scene in the movie. When she walked into the fray of ghosts with two guns blazing, she showed little girls that they can kick butt too. Overall, it was the perfect mix of comedy, action, and nostalgia. Don't take my word for it. Go see it yourself!
