We all know the trope: Two girls are best friends, boy comes into the picture, both girls want him, friendship is left behind. The TV shows, movies and books with story lines like these are what keeps viewers intrigued, everyone loves some drama, but what does that say about female friendships?
Here's a look at some female friendships, that while not without their share of problems, are not torn apart so easily by the Y-chromosome.
1. Rory and Lane, Gilmore Girls
Smarty, witty, and utter nerds, Rory and Lane is everything you wish your friendship was. They support each other, help each other escape from overbearing mothers, and always have time for music, coffee and books. These two never let boys come between them and always make time to be there for each other.
2. Lucy and Ethel, I Love Lucy
Dreaming, laughing, and concocting new schemes, Lucy and Ethel always have each others' backs. When those schemes inevitably go wrong, these to women never blame each other, but instead cover each other and work to help each other out. While Ethel is the voice of reason, she never lets Lucy take the fall alone.
3. Buffy and Willow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Blonde cheerleader and the computer-loving nerd may not seem like they have a lot in common, but Buffy and Willow are no normal teenagers. Buffy and Willows relationship, instant from the start, is based on such solidarity and support that it can survive the highs and lows of high school, supernatural creatures, and the forces of evil. Buffy and Willow's relationship grows and evolves as they grow, and it only grows stronger.
4. Eddy and Patsy, Absolutely Fabulous
Shameless, drunk, and fabulous, Eddy and Patsy are horrible failures in all relationships except their own. Nothing is worse to Eddy or Patsy than being normal or, god forbid, un-fabulous. With plenty of champagne, cigarettes, and botox these two women know the value of living for themselves, running from their problems and enjoying the moment. With a relationship as ageless as they try to be, Eddy and Patsy are true friendship goals.
5. Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia, Rose, The Golden Girls
The Golden Girls taught us that no matter what stage of life or stage of romantic relationship, your friends are always there. These women are bawdy, sarcastic, and larger than life, the uniqueness and strength of their friendship is not defined by men, most of their spouses are dead or divorced, which only makes their relationship stronger.
6. Leslie and Ann, Parks and Recreation
One of the strongest female friendships on TV, and it started with a pit. Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins start as strangers and grow closer than sisters, growing so close they're mistaken for a couple. Putting their friendship first, they taught us the mot important lesson, “Hoes before bros. Uteruses before dude-eruses. Ovaries before brovaries.”
