22-year-old Bethany was driving home from her aunt’s house in Michigan in August, 2010. She was in the passenger seat with her boyfriend behind the wheel of a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire. As they crossed the border into Oshawa, Bethany did something most of us wouldn’t think twice about doing.

She stretched out, got comfy, popped the seat back, and put her feet up on the dashboard. What happened next changed her life forever.

While Bethany was napping, a small vehicle collided with a motorcycle, which caused a tragic chain reaction. A semi-truck driver slammed on his brakes with Bethany’s Sunfire traveling behind. Her boyfriend couldn’t stop the car in time to avoid rear-ending the semi. He was, however, able to move his car over in time to save her legs; leg injuries are highly common as a result of car collisions.

The motorcyclist passed away. Bethany’s boyfriend needed 100 stitches. As for Bethany, her life has been forever changed, all because she put her feet up on the dashboard. She suffered broken bones to both her feet, and when the airbags went off, they hit back of her knees which caused them to slam her in the face, leaving her with a broken eye socket, cheek bone, and nose.

Though she has no memory of the crash, she feels its impact every day. She must take 20 pills each morning just to manage her pain.

Bethany went public with her story to help others learn from her mistake.

Watch her story below, and please SHARE this chilling message with your friends on Facebook.

What happened next changed her life forever.

The above photo shows what the Sunfire looked like after the crash.

Bethany and her boyfriend survived, but her life has been forever changed, all because she put her feet up on the dashboard.

She suffered broken bones to both feet, and when the airbags went off, they hit back of her knees which caused them to slam her in the face, leaving her with a dislocated jaw and a broken eye socket, cheek bone, and nose.

Though Bethany has no memory of the crash, she feels its impact every day.

She must take 20 pills each morning just to manage her pain. She must wear special orthopedic shoes. She can’t participate in activities that are common for other twenty-somethings.

Bethany, now 26, hopes her story will help others learn from her mistake.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead.
