Feeling Stressed Out?

It is that time of the year where swimming in stress is normal

It's that time of the year. Pumpkin spice is back, endless trips to the farms as well as "cuffing season." But for the majority of us this sounds so great but midterms are just around us. We have either taken our first major exam or about too. The last chance of dropping out to save your sanity is either gone or close. Sleep is a luxury even that 20 minute nap during lecture. It's that time of the year at school we all know too well. And for lots of us the part time or even full time job on top of it. College is really a big ball of stress. We have all been there and I have recently.

Remember:

1. This too shall pass. We are all working hard for something and this is just part of life, a roller coaster of stress and emotions. What is going on in school, in class is just not going to be forever. Time will make it go away. You can fight through it.

2. Take care of yourself. It is very healthy and normal to put down the textbook and get food with a roommate or blow off some steam. Be yourself don't let the stress and books keep you from helping yourself to food, water, sleep and some exercise. You will be thankful for that post-gym workout and meal you had with a shower to hit the books again.

3. Sleep sleep sleep. There is never enough time in the day for that perfect 12 hour deep slumber. Sleep is need for not just you but also for your body and mind. Give yourself a chance to reboot after the intense study session at 5 am. Plan out a time to give yourself a quick power nap.

4. Family will always be there. Mom might come in cluck with a care package of your favorite snacks or cookies. Maybe a trip home for a weekend with some books to clear your mind of the library. A new setting could just give you that extra two points.

5. It is okay to melt down but try not to burn yourself out. Doing too much, with high stress, as well as not distressing at all will put you in the fast lane for a mental burn out. You may think you are superman or iron man without the fly suit. Burning out takes a toll on the body and you can actually lose interest or the love for something. This goes for anything from relationships to work. Burning out is something you do not want to experience.

As difficult as it seems you will be okay in the end and the long run. It may seem like the light at the end of the tunnel is not to be seen. It is there and you will make it! Don't give up you came this far. You got this! Even Kelly Clarkson Sung "What doesn't kill you make you stronger." Gotta keep the faith.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
