We were all once the top of our class, the star athlete, the incredible musician, the best at something, anything. In order to get into a good university, we all had to excel at something. We stood out in our own unique way, and then we all came to the same school. While yes, it is amazing to be surrounded by a group of uniquely talented people, it can also leave you feeling like you aren't enough. You aren't the smartest, or prettiest, or most athletic anymore. Sometimes, in a school filled with so many different and special type of people it can just leave you feeling average.
I really struggled with this my first few months of college. Every time I made a B, when my friend aced it, or when the boy I thought was cute didn't approach me, but the other beautiful girl in the room, I was left feeling empty and as if I wasn't enough. I decided to let all of the people that surrounded me determine my self-worth. I decided to feel average.
Then I realized something. I am at the same school with all of these incredibly talented people. I got in, just like they did. I stood out to my school in some way before they admitted me, and I still hold the same qualities that made it happen. It is critical that we realize how special we are, even when we are surrounded by other very special people. We have to stop allowing ourselves to feel average, and find our uniqueness in a sea of people that are also unique and special.
