Spring quarter blues got you down? Take a break from studying and take a few hours' breaks and watch one of these feel-good films!
"The Princess Bride."
"The Princess Bride."
Why not start with a classic? Rob Reiner's 1987 fantasy-comedy is perfect for a rainy day. It's insanely quotable, and if you've never seen it, this is the perfect time to finally do so! Plus, who doesn't love a good romance?
"The Pursuit of Happyness."
"The Pursuit of Happyness."
OK, this movie is kind of a downer. But this is the perfect film if you need a really good cry. Seriously, are you even human if you don't tear up a little at the end? AND Will Smith is in the movie and a very tiny Jaiden Smith before he was the Jaiden Smith we know and love today.
"Hairspray."
"Hairspray."
Number one, a fantastic soundtrack. Number two, a stellar cast. Number three, an actual good adaptation of a Broadway musical. And number four, a non-historical civil rights story. Seriously, everything about this movie is fantastic and should be at the top of every musical theatre lovers list. And as an added bonus, John Travolta plays Edna Turnblad, so this film is basically cinematic gold.
"Four Weddings and a Funeral."
"Four Weddings and a Funeral."
Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell chase each other around this whole movie, spanning about a year and a half (and, you guessed it, four weddings and a funeral), and is the quintessential rom-com. It's hilarious, British, full of easter eggs that can only be found through multiple viewings, and it has Hugh Grant wearing glasses in multiple scenes. That last one is probably only fulfilling my personal fantasy, but who doesn't have a crush on Hugh Grant and all of his stammering glory?
"Groundhog Day."
"Groundhog Day."
Can you tell I have a preference for a certain rom-com actress? Seriously, though, Andie MacDowell is great in this one, too, and Bill Murray takes the cake as grouchy weatherman Phil Conners. But, overall, this film is really an existential metaphor for depression, without actually saying the word once. It's sweet, it's funny, there's a groundhog, and if you're planning to get Sonny and Cher's "I've Got You Babe" stuck in your head for a few days, this might be the movie to watch.
"Romy and Michele's High School Reunion."
"Romy and Michele's High School Reunion."
It's campy and cheesy, I know, but Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are simply perfect in this movie. Plus, a supporting cast of Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, and Camryn Manheim are pure 90's gold. It's a great movie to watch with your bestie and plan out how successful you'll be once you get to your ten-year class reunion (even though this movie is highly unrealistic, you can still dream).
The perfect way to get you going during a long quarter isn't just reserved to this small list of movies. Sit back, relax, find a good rom-com or whatever genre makes you happy, and take your mind off of a stressful quarter for a few hours.
