How I Feel About Brock Turner Being Released from Jail

Well, besides the fact that it is absolute BS, I feel infuriated and disgusted that Brock Turner was released from jail. Brock Turner sexually assaulted a woman, and he served only three months. Three months. That is insulting, it is insulting to the woman he assaulted and it is insulting to women everywhere who fear that if the same thing were to happen to them, that justice would not properly be served.

It is ridiculous that someone can go to jail longer for non-violent crimes, such as possession of marijuana, than someone can for knowingly raping or sexually assaulting someone. This speaks volumes about our society, but speaks even louder about the judicial system in the United States today. This case is not the only case to receive a ridiculously forgiving sentence, there have been several over the course of the past few years and has continued to become an issue.

Some states have set new legal statures, creating a new minimum sentence for these types of crimes, but not all states have. Something must be done. There must be a federal law passed to all states setting a standard for sentencing in these cases, no one should be able to walk away from raping someone with only three months of jail time or a year of probation, like a student from Indiana University was sentenced recently for the rape of two young women.

I have spoken about this issue before and I will continue to write and to speak about it until I see something done about it. I will not sit around and watch the lives of the victims change forever because of the physical and emotional damage that was inflicted while the perpetrators of these heinous crimes walk free. It is unfair and something must be done.

I propose that more men and women everywhere speak out about the issue. I propose that citizens of all states write letters to their senators and their representatives asking for a law or a bill to be created. Something must be done on a federal level for change to be made and for progress and society to move forward.

Rape culture is a real thing, and our society continues to cultivate it. This must be stopped as well. I go on social media, on twitter or on Facebook and at times I see jokes being made about rape and sexual assault and to me this is absolutely unacceptable. Our society has grown to condone violent sexual crimes and this must not continue if we are to make progress. There is nothing funny about sexual assault and rape and it is certainly not a joking matter. It is an issue that must be taken very seriously and must be resolved sooner rather than later.

So, yes, Brock Turner being released from jail is infuriating to me and I am disturbed by the fact that he will return to society and potentially not face any more consequences, other than nearly everyone in America knowing who he is and what horrible thing he did. As I said, something must be done, so let’s do something about it.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
