Fear And Wisdom Teeth

Stop being afraid.

Fear And Wisdom Teeth
Buzzfeed

When this article comes out, I will be preparing myself for wisdom teeth removal. I have six apparently, so it should be fun. When I had braces, I remember how bad the pain was when they tightened them. Sometimes I would have to wear a sort of alignment mouth guard which was so tight when I took them off I couldn't put them on the table a few feet from my bed because the relief was so soothing. I fell asleep almost instantly. Tooth pain is the worst kind of pain; it just doesn't stop and it hurts a lot.

Whenever I anticipate pain I almost always tense up in a sort of paralysis. In my mind I'm cringing and wincing thinking, "This is gonna hurt". This sort of fear of pain creates a paralysis and we become inactive. We don't want to go on. We don't want to face the pain. But sometimes we have to go through pain and that's a part of life. Like if I didn't get my wisdom teeth removed, I could have some serious tooth problems and that would lead to more pain. I think this avoidance of pain can lead to more pain later, and sometimes we would rather have it that way.

The reason I'm writing about fear is that it always seems to come back. Every once in a while there is something that comes up and I'm stuck in my tracks. I think we look at the next obstacle and get tunnel vision instead of looking at life in the long term. Fear leads to inactivity and idleness, and getting over obstacles is made more difficult by this. We're always so worried about what's right in front of us, we don't realize that there are bigger problems ahead and what we want to do with our lives won't be solved by standing by.

I think we fear that things won't work out or we fear pain and that everything will work out all right. I don't think that's the case. You have to work hard and take risks. You can't just go through the motions. You have to make choices and sometimes you have to make them quicker than you'd like. My favorite quote is "You think you have time" because really, when fear is holding you back, you're running out of time. You're running out of time to do the things you love and pursue your passions.

Ultimately, you can't fear everything in life. You have to make choices and risks. There will be pain and you will have to overcome obstacles. Some nights you will know that the pain will be unbearable and you don't know how long it will last. Do not avoid it. Overcome it. Fear usually gets in the way. Don't let it stop you from doing what you need to do to keep moving forward.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
