Hillary Clinton, battling through one of the fiercest presidential elections in American history, probably thought the worst of her email woes were over.
No such luck, a stunning move by the FBI reveals, as the Bureau reopened its investigation into the former Secretary of State’s use of a private email server this Friday. In a letter sent to Congress, James Comey (director of the FBI) indicated that “emails pertinent to the investigation” had turned up in a separate case. Multiple federal officials revealed to news outlets including NBC and New York Times that these emails originated from a computer belonging to the disgraced Anthony Weiner, whose career took a plunge this past August in yet another sexting scandal. The controversy prompted his wife, Huma Abedin (Clinton’s longtime-aide) amidst the firestorm that followed. Weiner has been the subject of an FBI investigation since September, when his cellphone and personal records were subpoenaed by U.S. prosecutors for allegedly sexting an underage teen.
The Clinton investigation had previously ended in July, with no charges recommended by Comey, fueling political outrage; now, two weeks before the November election, the controversy has been ripped wide open with this new development. The news comes on the heels of the massive Wikileaks email dump, revealing corruption and shady activities within the Clinton campaign.
During a New Hampshire rally on Friday, Donald Trump capitalized on the FBI's actions, stating: "We must not let her take her criminal scheme into the oval office. I have great respect for the fact that the FBIand the Department of Justice are now willing to have the courage to right the horrible mistakes that they made. This was a grave miscarriage of justice that the american people fully understood, and it is everybody's hope that it is about to be corrected.
"In a response to the FBI, Clinton called upon them to give out "the full and complete facts immediately" concerning the emails in question, following up that she was "confident, whatever they are, will not change the conclusion reached in July. Therefore, it's imperative that the Bureau explain this issue in question, whatever it is, without any delay."
The latest in a race full of twists and turns, whether or not the FBI’s new probe will spell truly bad news for Clinton remains to be seen. Voters will also no doubt see Donald Trump attempt to further capitalize on the situation, hoping to gain a lead over Hillary in key battleground states before November 8th.
