Originally, the FBI was not going to release how they hacked into Syed Farook’s, the gunman from the San Bernardino shootings, cell phone. Though they still have not revealed the technicalities of it all, just he fact that they paid professional hackers for a one-time job. James Comey, the director of the FBI, said that the bureau “purchased a tool” off of these professionals.
The tool that the FBI received is a tool that can only be used on an iPhone 5c running the iOS 9 software, which is the type of phone Farook was using at the time. They have yet to release whether they will inform Apple and the public exactly how they hacked the phone to begin with.
Olivia Pope may be wearing a "White Hat," but these hackers are known as "Gray Hats." They are not using their knowledge and hacking abilities to inform the public, but to assist third parties like the government. They are not doing these actions with the intent of anything evil or malicious, but really just trying to help what they think is the best route for our country. Some say these Gray hats serve as assistant spies for the government, and also help with tracking terrorists who are spying on the United States.
One could say it is our right to know how the FBI and these hackers have retrieved information if they have discovered any to begin with. However for the sake of national security, I think it is important we respect what the FBI wants to keep confidential.Personally, I do not want everyone in the general public to know how to hack phones and have access to other people's information. This is also something that can be revealed at a later time. I do not see the urgency. Generally speaking, the FBI works in the best interest of the people and if they are withholding how they have hacked into Farook’s phone it is for a good reason. However, in the future maybe it will be a possibility.
