Alpha Coders

I didn't read nearly as much as I should have this year, but I opened and started so many wonderful books that it would be a disgrace not to share them.

1. A Court of Mist and Fury: By, the wonderfully talented, Sarah J Maas

So with this book I'm a little biased, mainly because Sarah is one of my all time favorite authors, but she has earned every inkling of it. The book is the second to the A Court of Thorns and Roses and it's absolutely riveting. It had me heart broken and glowing at the same time. If you like romance, adventure, and action then this is definitely the book for you.

2. Falling Kingdoms: By Morgan Rhodes

I originally started this book a very long time ago, but I never finished it. In my first opinion of the first 40 pages I didn't think it was for me. It seemed so boring and dull, but over the summer I picked it up again, determined to finish it. I found that it was an excellently crafted fantasy with multiple outlooks and such unique characters. The characters aren't perfect, but that's exactly what makes them perfect. If you love magic, medieval, and adventure, then please read this book!

3. Truthwitch: By Susan Dennard

This book is everything that you would want in an adventurous fantasy piratey novel. It follows interesting characters on a absolutely crazy journey across the sea, where they find themselves and more about the world they live in. My favorite part is that the strong connection between characters is not romance, though there is romance, but the main structure of the book's plot is friendship.

4. Red Queen: By Victoria Aveyard

So if you haven't heard of this series yet I would ask you if you'd been living under a rock, but besides that fact. Red Queen is a dystopian novel that follows a completely and utterly flawed teenage character who is trying to find out who and what she is in the world. The book deals with the hard issues of their broken society and how Mare tries her best to fix them, and in a sense it reminds me of how all teenagers are. It was a great book with a time stopping plot twist.

5. This Savage Song: By Victoria Schwab

In another dystopian universe the world is tragically divided, but some where in the chaos two unlikable allies match up. This book is absolutely terrifying, but in all the great ways. The main characters are so different, but at the same time really relatable for most young adults. I fell in love with this book by accident, but it was the best mistake I made. It also does not flaunt much romance, if at all, in the book, which is very drawing in itself. She puts so much time into the character development and it's simply amazing.

These were just my favorites, but what were your favorites this year? Keep reading everyone!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
