Just because it's a new year doesn't mean we can't hold on to what is tried-and-true to our hearts. That's right, I'm talking about what we UD students hold truly sacred—something so great that it justifies a trek across campus and a march up a winding hill. What some would call simply lunch, to Flyers it means a little bit more: a VWK sandwich.
Kettering Wrap
Starting with this classic, Flyers fought to put this beloved item back on the menu after a quick scare of its dismissal in 2014. Made with chicken tenders and cheese covered in a red pepper mayo, it's pretty much about all the cholesterol our hearts can handle in one sitting. If this bad boy is your go-to, then you live life on the edge. And by that, I mean you're a stressed out college student, balancing 18 credits, extracurriculars, and a roller coaster of emotions, and it's alright to find your happiness in red pepper mayo and chicken tenders once a week.
Larry's
For this option, I'm talking heaven meets earth in the form of chicken draped in barbecue and honey mustard on a toasted pretzel bun. Another stable menu item, the only downside is it takes twice as long to make. If this is your guilty pleasure, then you could care less about the annoyed looks for holding up that sandwich line as they roast your chicken separately then for a second time altogether with your sandwich. You eat that sandwich with pride and accomplishment, knowing that Larry truly does know best.
Italian
This guy right here is the works: salami, ham, pepperoni, and provolone drenched in Italian dressing, all on a toasted sub. He's a classic, found on most menus across college campuses, but Flyers know that there is just something special about this one. If this is your easy fix, then no doubt you're as classy as the sandwich you devour.
Turkey Bacon
The underrated second cousin of the VWK sandwich menu. Turkey, bacon, chipotle mayo, and gouda cheese—I mean, come on. This sandwich is delicious, its smokey, savory, and has a little kick. If this is your pick-me-up, then no doubt you enjoy the finer things in life (bacon) and always root for the underdog.
Caprese
For this Mediterranean delight, you're either one of two people. A line has been drawn and you either belong to the group who takes snobbish hipster pride in pronouncing your sandwich with confidence, or you belong to the group who just isn't sure and whispers the name in the hopes that the sweet lunch mom behind the counter understands your look of embarrassment and reaches knowingly for that pesto mayo. Ca-preese or ca-prey-zey? The world may never know.
Heart Healthy Turkey
Now, I'm a go big or go home type of person, like, if you're going to splurge why not just go all the way; give me whole fat milk in my grande frappuccino, and yes, I will pay the extra $1.29 to upgrade from a side salad to fries. But I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by this sandwich. With the nine grain bread, turkey, guac, and the little heart on your sandwich wrapper, it's all a great combo. If you prefer this healthier option, you are obviously not like me, but there's nothing wrong with taking care of yourself. You don't need all the fixin's to make you happy, and hey, that's great for both your personal life and America's heart disease statistics.
BYO
This is it, ladies and gents: the prime time, the big leagues of sandwich artistry where young hopefuls put their skills to the test. If this is your go-to, then you don't like being categorized into boxes. You mix and match different flavor combinations until you find your soulmate sandwich, and after that then it's just a match made in heaven.
