I'll admit, I'm definitely on the nerdier side of things.
I like writing, academics, music, and art over sports and other popular media. I'm the kind of girl who would love to see a show at the New York City Ballet rather than a professional football game. Unfortunately, my budget doesn't match my taste and my disinterest in sports hindered my social life in high school. I was scared I wouldn't fit in within Syracuse culture since sports are a big deal.
Upperclassmen constantly reassured me that college is different than high school.
I understood the general claim, but I always doubted that anything would change three months between graduation and move-in day. I would still be my nerdier, awkward "semi-artsy" girl surrounded by a bunch of sports fanatics. I wouldn't memorize Syracuse team statistics or suddenly be interested in something I never was in the first place.
The 2018 Homecoming football game between UNC and Syracuse completely changed my understanding of sports.
Most of my friends here are interested in sports on some level. Some just have a team they happen to like because they're supporting their city. Others are crazy for it and want to make it their career in sports, whether it's in public relations, broadcasting, management, or photography.
These are the friends who get to the Dome as soon as the gates open to grab front row seats instead of tailgating. They make signs the night before and wave them in front of the cameras during games. Their school pride is contagious, so I decided to tag along with them.
This game was different than the previous ones. This was the homecoming game. The alumni from different classes returned to support their alma mater, whether it was watching the game in the stands or playing in their old marching band. I felt like there was more of a motivation for the team to win.
This was the closest game I ever watched. I stayed past halftime and stayed the entire time.
It was the fourth quarter and Syracuse was behind. At this point, I was emotionally invested and wanted Syracuse to win their homecoming game. I could see sports fans filtering out on the other side. I was leaning over the banister trying to see what the players were going to do. I started biting my nails on one hand and gripping my friend's hand with the other. Time was running out and Syracuse needed to get a touchdown to tie to play into overtime.
I think over time is the most stressful part of football.
My friend, Alex explained to me that each team gets a chance to score a touchdown or a field goal to break the tie. If they both get a touchdown, the process repeats until there is a clear winner. My hands hurt from banging my hands on the seats. My head hurt from screaming and cheering so loudly. I was starting to lose my voice, which rarely ever happens.
Syracuse got a touchdown. But then UNC got a touchdown. UNC got a field goal and then Syracuse got the winning touchdown. I don't think I was ever happier to see a team win.
Syracuse is known for their school pride. Students bleed orange for real. I was so glad to experience this part of Syracuse culture with my new friends. I think I'm starting to understand why people are so passionate about sports here. I never thought I would say this, but I can't wait for basketball season now!
