Sad news seems to have been the only news this past week. After losing David Bowie, on Jan. 14, 2016, the world lost another wonderful talent. Alan Rickman passed away at age 69 after battling cancer. It seems difficult to understand why people can feel such loss over someone they never knew. However, fans can feel a deep connection to their favorite actors and characters. When someone they admire passes away, it can almost feel like losing a friend.
Alan Rickman was known for his roles in movies such as "Die Hard," "Sweeney Todd" and the "Harry Potter" series. Being a "Potterhead" myself, I feel deeply saddened by this loss. Alan Rickman portrayed the character Severus Snape in the movies. He was the dark, mysterious professor who taught potions class at Hogwarts. Although at times he was a villain, he became one of the most beloved characters. Whether you hated or loved Snape, I think all Potter fans are sad to see such a great actor pass away. Other stars from the "Harry Potter"movies have taken time to remember their co-star and friend. Daniel Radcliffe, Harry in the films, wrote a touching post online about Rickman. In his post, Daniel said, "Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with." He goes on to say that contrary to the characters Alan has played on film, he was "extremely kind, generous, self-depricating, and funny." J.K. Rowling, author of the "Harry Potter"books, has also spoken of Alan on her Twitter account.
While the world will always remember Alan Rickman, muggles and wizards everywhere will remember him as the scary professor, telling Harry and Ron to turn to page 394. Snape was most likely the first villain that captured our hearts, while also making us incredibly nervous with a simple glare. You know the one.
Wizards everywhere will raise their wands for Alan Rickman. Our favorite potions professor will always be in our hearts.
