Being a film major, I've taken many classes that require you to watch movies for class discussions, whether it's on your own time or in class. While there have been some movies that honestly were not my cup of tea, there were a few that I thoroughly enjoyed watching. Here's some of my favorite movies from my film classes, in no particular order, that I recommend you add to your movie queue.
1. All That Jazz 1979 Directed by Bob Fosse
Coming from a theater background, I knew Bob Fosse as a legendary choreographer. I was even in a show, "The Pajama Game", where I had to learn his choreography. Fosse co-wrote and directed All That Jazz and based the main character on himself. The movie focusses on the main character's struggle to work on a broadway show, edit his film, and get through life without killing himself in the process. It's a great film for theater lovers and is full of fantastic symbolism that works to make this a memorable movie.
2. Some Like it Hot 1959 Directed by Billy Wilder
Two men disguise themselves as women and join an all women band to hide from a gang after witnessing a murder? Sounds like a fun time! Marilyn Monroe plays a supporting role in this film, so of course she sings a few songs during the movie. This film is full of visual gags and hysterical dialogue that will have anyone rolling on the floor laughing.
3. M*A*S*H 1970 directed by Robert Altman
I grew up watching the M*A*S*H TV show and I loved the characters and comedy portrayed in the show, even though I was too young to get all the jokes. When watching the movie it took me a while to get my bearings on who was who, since I was so used to the television cast. But once I knew who everyone was, I was cracking up laughing at almost every line. A comedy about the Korean War, Altman shows both the highs a lows of war. While mostly comedic moments occur in this film, Altman also shows the serious side of war, as to not take the topic too lightly. It's got a great cast of characters used to ensure the audience leaves the theater laughing.
4. The Deer Hunter 1978 directed by Michael Cimino
I initially thought I was not going to like this film, it's a 3 hour drama about war and that just wasn't really my thing. But as I was watching it I became engrossed. With star performances by actors like Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and even Meryl Streep, this movie shows the horrors of the Vietnam war and how it affects everyone it touches. It has it's lighthearted moments and can be funny at times, but by the end of the movie I was in tears (which isn't hard for a movie to do). This movie certainly is not for the faint of heart, but i would recommend it to anyone who is willing to watch it.
5. Fargo 1996 Directed by the Coen Brothers
Ever want to watch a movie full of heavy Minnesotan accents? Yeah, me neither. BUT! This drama and and crime film is so suspenseful you won't even notice the accents, or you'll at least get used to it further into the movie. With big stars like William H Macy and Steve Buscemi, this movie is full of tension and detective work. It's an interesting watch, and the setting of a Minnesota winter just adds on to the creepiness and uncertainty as the detectives try to solve the crimes.
