31 Times Your Dad Was Right All Along

An open letter of understanding from every matured Daddy's girl

31 Times Your Dad Was Right All Along
Sara Sullivan

Eighteen years of being stubborn, headstrong, obstinate and independent have taught me that no matter how much I ignore the world's view of what's right and wrong, my dad will always be correct. Being the Daddy's girl I am, he was really the only one who could get to me when I was too headstrong for the rest of the world. No matter how far astray I would think I've fallen, I could always count on my dad for one thing: to make sure I've learned my lesson.

As I sit here typing this with more wisdom and experience than my younger self could even think of having, here's a huge thank you to my Dad for the guidance, confidence, and freedom to make my own decisions, as well as always being my voice of reason when nobody else could get past my thick skull.

1. You'll always be his favorite girl.

2. He's just a phone call away.

3. He loves you more than any boyfriend ever can (or ever will).

4. Making yourself happy is more important than anything.

5. That guy didn't deserve you.

6. And trust him, no one ever will.

7. But when you meet "the one" he better be the BEST guy ever.

8. Everything happens for a reason. It's all part of growing up.

9. He's always watching out for you.

10. You're stronger than anyone who thinks they can push you around.

11. There's no point in fighting with him. He's a pretty reasonable guy.

12. When he's shopping for you, he doesn't know which shirt you will like more, but he'll try his best and take a guess.

13. Sometimes, it's the thought that counts.

14. Don't rely on anyone to help you be successful. Be independent.

15. If someone even starts to believe they have any control over you, they're surely confused.

16. You're wasting your time if you start arguing with someone to get the point across... start by seeing their side.

17. If you're not quite there yet, fake it until you make it.

18. Go out and get what you want because why not.

19. He is only trying to protect you.

20. You probably were being a little overdramatic.

21. "No" really means no.

22. And one day you'll understand his reasoning.

23. Yes, you were probably too young to go on a vacation with your freshmen year boyfriend.

24. Change teaches you a lot about yourself.

25. You won't find a better dance partner so accept his crazy dance moves.

26. Relax a little... everything will be alright.

27. There's always a gray area between the black and white.

28. His taste in music was actually pretty good and you just didn't realize it.

29. And he's a pretty funny guy (well, sometimes).

29. The world has tons of stupid people in it. Sometimes all you can do is smile and nod because there's no point of an argument.

30. It's your body, just remember that tattoos are very permanent.

Last but not least....

31. You'll never stop learning from him.. even after eighteen years.

Thank you, Dad,

From a daughter who is finally old enough to understand

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.
