Everyone wants to see a character on TV that they can relate to. Unfortunately, larger ladies haven't seen that many on the screen. The following lists eight women whose characters are so much more than their weight.
1. Rae Earl, My Mad Fat Diary
This show literally changed my life. It was the first time I saw a character on T.V. that actually looked like me, thought like me, and had similar experiences.
2. Jane Bingum, Drop Dead Diva
When a model wakes up as a fat lawyer, of course there's some commentary about size. What I love is this show spends most episodes with no mention of Jane's size, but still has episodes that address some of the harsh realities of being a fat woman.
Honestly, this show is part of the reason I went to Law School.
3. Donna Meagle, Parks and Recreation
Donna is a sassy badass on Parks. I love that her character is hilarious but doesn't fall into the typical fat girl trope of comedic relief due to her size.
Plus, the writers weren't afraid to make her a sexual being, and I freaking love it.
4. Sookie St. James, Gilmore Girls
With Gilmore Girls back, how could I leave this funny, quirky, cook off the list?
5. Penelope Garcia, Criminal Minds
Her outfits alone are reason enough for her to be on this list.
6. Becky, Empire
Last year the internet lost it when her character had sex. I cheered for finally normalizing fat characters having sex.
7. Laverne, Scrubs
Laverne was sassy, cranky and one of the most feared characters. She added a fun dynamic to the hospital gang.
8. Mindy, The Mindy Project
Mindy's a doctor, a single mom, rocks an amazing wardrobe, and has dated so many hot men. Sure she has moments where she worries about her weight or tries to get fit, but most of the time her curvy figure has nothing to do with the captivating storylines.
