What Not To Do To Fast-Food Employees

Here's what we want our customers to know.

What Not To Do To Fast-Food Employees

When working in a drive-thru, there are things that we have to say but we do not want to. Not everything we say needs a response, but at least acknowledge the fact that we opened our mouths and do not just throw money at us. We understand that you do not think highly of us, but at least look us in the eyes. Also, for your information, just because someone works in fast food doesn’t mean we are dumb or uneducated. Some of us actually are there to work and earn the money that puts food on the table and gas in the cars. Even more often than not, though, we are either high school or college students. It is actually a good job to have as a student, especially with the flexible scheduling and the way you can still keep your job when you are on a break. So, you don’t have to be rude, just be a normal human being and talk to us the way we should be talked to and treated with the same respect we give to you. Here are the top five things that really tick us off as fast food employees:

When you come through drive-thru and you say “Hold on, I do not know what I want yet.”

The point of the drive-thru is to place an order you already know and to receive your food more conveniently. When you come through the drive-thru and you haven’t made up your mind, you are holding not only the people in line behind you up, but also stressing the workers out more because we have time limits we are supposed to meet.

When we ask how your day was, we really do not care, we are just being respectful like we are trained to be.

Not everything we say we really want an answer to; just say, “Good, thank you!” and drive away like we never had contact.

When you hand us sweaty money…

When you hand us this money, we do not want to take it, but we do not have the right to deny it. But when we go get a glove to put on because we saw you pull it out of your bra do not give us a dirty look. It is unsanitary and just plain gross.

When we repeat your order, you see it is correct, and then get mad because you paid for the wrong order.

I get it, you do not want to talk to me, but I really do not want to talk to you, either. Just listen when we speak and there will be no problems. I promise that it will take no more than thirty seconds.

When you finally get your food, then say, "Oh, can I add such and such an item?"

Like, no, you cannot, but because it is our job to serve the customer, we have to mess up the rotation of everything just to do everything for you, but it is okay.

So when you decide to do any of these things, the only thing that can make it even tolerable is if you have a dog or puppy, because we all know seeing our furry friends is the highlight of our day!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
