As the evening light encroaches through the yellow-tainted blinds it gently illuminates a dormitory living room, which to my dismay is a rioting mess from the neglect of a frenzied week. The small, rectangular coffee table draped with a white blanket where I rest my feet is stained by early morning mishaps of Earl Grey and deep red nail polish. The consoling smell of a baking pizza drifts through the air and a royal blue Snuggie is tossed across the couch, slowly spilling off onto the crumb-ridden floor.
But none of that matters. Instead, it is the distraction and immersion in what lights up the screen of a battered HP laptop. The flashes, quick cuts in and out, and the alluring voices that bring all the sense into one place: The Vogue YouTube Channel. As the sun is slowly setting outside, the true captivation lays within the editorials that invoke yearning and even nostalgia for a world that is entered through YouTube as one of the newest forms of escapism in fashion.
Throughout the ages, fashion has been created as a form of escape, a way to make the days a little bit better and filled with imagination as you dress yourself for the day, as it does allow you to assume a different identity each day. For decades, it has been the clothes that are the escape themselves, not what goes on behind them. But (at least for me) things have changed.
Through these channels such as YouTube, magazines have created a new outlet, a new medium even, for another look into the fashion industry. It further feeds the feeling of escape that fashion allows people, because not only do we see the magazines on the shelves and the clothes in the store, but how the pieces are made. We see a day in the life of an editor. It is a new and unconventional way of reporting or displaying a piece of clothing. So is this now more of an educational and enriching escape as well?
We can forget about our everyday life for even just a few moments as we learn the story, the inspiration and the work behind the world that seems so glamorous. It is no longer just about the glamour that is so intriguing, but the process. It’s no longer just a visual reminder of a different world, but instead a look at the work horses, not just the show ponies.
Through video form, people can now begin to see in a more relatable, less intimidating way that fashion is another form of creativity. These channels allow them to tap into the true essence of the industry.
For instance, the Chanel channel doesn’t show just the runway, but the patience and dedication that goes into threading each bead on that “overpriced gown.” These channels debunk some of the myths around the industry. It shows us why the gown is priced so high and that some fashion editors still sift through the thrift shop. These videos harness and showcase the creativity within these instances, something many people need to see to better understand the industry. This is something you don’t see in the September issue. Take a look for yourself below.
I am interested to see where fashion goes with YouTube. The mix of moving editorials and the “day in the life” videos are finally giving fashion the better representation to remind the masses that there is more to this book (or magazine) then the cover.
