Dear Mr. Palmer,
When I found out you had passed from this world, the news had shocked me along with the rest of the golf world. I didn’t think it was possible for such a legend and wonderful person to go too soon, despite the fact that you were eighty-seven. I’m only twenty-one years old, but you have impacted my golfing career and life in more ways than one. Even though your golfing era was long gone by the time I got here, your stories and wise words trickled into the lives of young golfers such as myself.
You have taught me how important it is to be goodhearted opponent, and to always leave a positive, lasting impact on all those I compete against. I had a tournament this past week where I cheered on my playing partner’s ball in the hopes of soaring the creek nestled below the green. Later, she thanked me for cheering on her ball. You have taught me that golf isn’t about beating out the other opponent, but realizing that the course is the only one that stands between victory and defeat.
By watching you, I have realized that golf isn’t about the score that you sign off on at the conclusion of eighteen holes. Even though you and Jack battled it out for all those years, you remained the greatest of friends in your old age. Through your example, I have learned that it is all about the memories that you create as you are walking down each winding fairway with the ones who tread the same journey as you do. The score only validates so much about one person. It’s about the integrity you encompass, the respect you give others, and the real, authentic compassion for the game that you radiate.
Thank you, Mr. Palmer, for being such a beloved, genuine ambassador of the game. As I grow older, I can’t wait to pass on to my children the stories and legacy you have left behind. Thank you for showing me the true meaning of golf and why, in your words, “it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind ever invented.” I am more than certain that you will be watching the Masters this coming April from the best seat in the House.
Sincerely,
A Golfer
