"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is in theaters everywhere now and it is just as great as J.K. Rowling's other works. This piece is Rowling's latest addition to the wizarding world of Harry Potter she so creatively designed. This movie, in particular, is set many decades earlier and across the ocean. While this movie has had many positive responses there are many unanswered questions.
1. If Newt was really expelled from Hogwarts, how does he still have his wand?
We all saw when Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts his wand was confiscated by the Ministry of Magic and quickly destroyed. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix the same thing would've happened had Dumbledore not intervened. However, since most of Newts story has been a mystery we must assume one of two things: 1) that Newt was of age when he was expelled or 2) the Ministry deemed him not to be a threat. We can expect this question to be answered though since according to J.K. Rowling there are three more movies in the works.
2. How long will it take for Grindelwald to escape?
As many Harry Potter fans can remember in 1945 Albus Dumbledore dueled and defeated Gellert Grindelwald, ending the wizarding war till Voldemorts rise. We can assume that this is where the Fantastic Beast series will end -- with Grindelwald's defeat -- but my major quip is how soon will he escape and be featured in the next three movies.
3. Is Credence really dead?
This is one of the most perplexing questions the movie left us wondering because it seemed as though he was so clearly killed, however the camera lingered on the small wisp of what was left of him and his obscurus residue for too long for him not to still be alive. Rowling has also previously mentioned that he plays a significant role in the movies to come. Is he significant and present or is he merely symbolically important?
4. Is Credence a Gaunt?
It honestly could be his haircut, however his familial resemblance to Tom Riddle is uncanny. The Gaunt family is known as one of the most nefarious of the wizarding world so it would not be surprising if this was a part of the Gaunt's anger towards muggles (nomags) and even other wizards. Considering he was adopted and this is roughly 70 years before the Harry Potter series anything is possible. This could be irrelevant though if Credence is really dead.
5. Has Jacob really been obliviated?
The film seems to make it clear that he was obliviated however the film's end leaves some doubt. His entire bakery is full of pastries that look like Nifflers and Murtlaps. Not only does that happen but Queenie visits Jacobs bakery and there is a glint of recognition in his eyes as though he might know her. Though if he really was obligated we still hope his character continues to be in the films as well as Queenie introducing him to magic again later on.
